Dan Campbell thinks Lions’ Jared Goff can take even more control of offense

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Jared Goff hit new highs last season for the Detroit Lions. He did everything asked of him and brought more ideas and opinions to the table, and Dan Campbell wants even more.

Goff is entering Year 5 as the starting quarterback in Detroit. He hit a career-best 72.4% of his passes last season, throwing for 4,629 yards with a career-best 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. For his efforts, Goff finished fifth in MVP voting after leading the Lions to back-to-back division titles and a franchise record 15 wins.

Now, with a new offensive coordinator entering the equation and Goff entrenched as the franchise quarterback, Campbell expects even more control for the 30-year-old.

“He continues to grow every year,” Campbell said. “I would say the next step for him, and he knows this, every year, like last year he came to us, everything we wanted him to do in the offense, he did.

“And then he began to bring stuff to us, as ‘Hey, man,’ I can see this look. Let me get to this play. I know I’ve got these options in the bag. But let me get to this, as well. Right? Those are the things where it’s like, he’s ‘OK, here we go, man.’ That’s beginning to show. I would anticipate to that to take another step up.”

Goff started to break out when Ben Johnson took over as offensive coordinator and included him in the process of planning and talking about what he liked and what he didn’t. For his efforts, Goff landed a four-year extension worth up to $212 million last offseason. That deal keeps Goff under team control through the 2028 season as he continues to try and take the Lions to the promised land.

New Lions offensive coordinator John Morton, who spent the 2022 season with the Lions, knows that better than most. Morton spent most of that season working with Goff and the passing game and has a good feel and relationship with the veteran signal-caller.

Morton spent last season with Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos. He served as the passing game coordinator, helping get the most out of rookie quarterback Bo Nix and bringing the franchise back into the postseason.

He is banking on his love of calling plays, familiarity with the coaching staff and quarterback to hit the ground running with one of the NFL’s best all-around offenses.

“I’ve seen him grow, you know, when he got to Detroit to where he is now,” Morton said at the scouting combine. “And then it’s us sitting down as a staff and watching the cut-ups, how we can make them better.

“I know the plays, but it was the techniques and everything that goes with it. So I did that (in 2022). I did that with Jared and (quarterbacks coach Mark) Brunell. Whether it was drills, certain drills to work with to help the quarterback, I thought that was big. And just game planning; how to teach the quarterback, as far as game plan, third down, red zone, this and that. What to look for. Things like that. I was a big part of that.”
