Palestinian rights group blast Israeli official’s 'confession' of harsh detainee treatment

**RAMALLAH, Palestine**

The Palestinian Prisoners Society on Tuesday condemned statements by Israel’s extremist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, calling them a "confession" of systematic crimes against Palestinian detainees. The criticism followed Ben-Gvir’s Monday social media post outlining punitive measures imposed on prisoners in Israeli jails.

In his post on X, Ben-Gvir wrote: “No deposits, no canteens, fifteen-minute shower (instead of 8 hours), one hour for yard. There are no large refrigerators. We have narrowed down the menu. no prisoner representation, no education, no dental care. There are no aesthetic treatments.”

Amjad al-Najjar, spokesperson for the non-governmental Palestinian Prisoners Society, blasted Ben-Gvir’s remarks as a “new confession of his crimes, all falling under torture.”

Najjar said that these actions have led to the deaths of dozens of prisoners and detainees, providing “sufficient evidence” to bring Ben-Gvir before international courts.

He called the statements an “explicit admission of organized, systematic crimes,” building on prior incitements to kill detainees before and during the Gaza genocide.

Ben-Gvir has previously bragged about such policies, appearing in videos showing prisoner mistreatment and advocating their execution.

On Feb. 24, he posted footage of guards forcing detainees at gunpoint to kneel and paint over slogans they had written on prison walls, including “Arab Jerusalem.”

On July 31, 2024, he said in a widely shared video, “We should shoot Palestinian prisoners in the head instead of giving them more food,” endorsing a bill from his far-right Jewish Power party to execute detainees.

Over 9,500 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons, including more than 350 children, 22 women, and 3,405 administrative detainees, according to Palestinian figures.

Administrative detention allows Israeli military authorities to hold individuals for up to six months—renewable indefinitely—based on alleged security threats, without charges.

The Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society reported that prisoners face “systematic, organized crimes” in Israeli jails.

These conditions have resulted in the deaths of dozens, with 63 identified—including 40 from Gaza—while many Gaza detainees remain forcibly disappeared, the groups added.

Tensions have been running high across the occupied West Bank, where over 940 Palestinians have been killed and over 7,000 others injured in attacks by the Israeli army and illegal settlers since the start of the Gaza onslaught on Oct. 7, 2023, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
