Manchester City v Leicester City: The Opposition

Manchester City welcome relegation-threatened Leicester City to the Etihad Stadium as they look to overtake Chelsea and take hold of the last Champions League slot. Both teams are desperate for points, with City possibly leapfrogging Chelsea with victory while Leicester would take a leap in their fight against the drop.

The visitors may well fancy their chances against the Blues, with City’s defensive issue clear and, with the absence of Erling Haaland, they may be looking to steal all three points on Wednesday night.

However, the Foxes form isn’t exactly great and they will face a monumental task as they face the Blues on Wednesday evening.

Form

Leicester have struggled all season, with just four wins from 29 matches. Only two of those have come on their travels, with the Foxes beating Southampton 3-2 back in October, then recorded a surprise 2-1 victory at Spurs at the end of January.

Sadly for Leicester, that is their only league win of 2025 and their first victory since a 3-1 home win over West Ham at the beginning of December. Since then, they have played 15 Premier League matches, losing 13 and drawing one, in addition to the win at Spurs.

Leicester have also lost their last six league matches and they sit second-bottom of the table, nine point from safety. They have kept just one clean sheet in the league so far this season and that was a 1-0 win over Bournemouth at the beginning of October and have failed to keep a clean sheet on their travels so far this season.

The Foxes have lost ten of their 14 matches on the road this season, scoring just 14 times and with 35 goals conceded, they have the worst defensive away record in the Premier League. They’ll be happy that Haaland isn’t playing but will not have to contend with Omar Marmoush!

Once to Watch

At 38 years old, Jamie Vardy is still leading the line at Leicester. The former England striker is now in his 13th season with the Foxes, has scored seven goals from 27 matches so far, although he loves scoring against the Blues. He has attempted 47 shots at goal, has a shot accuracy of 45% but a goal conversion rate of just 15%, a bit of a comedown from what he once was.

Bilal El Khannouss, Facundo Buonanotte (Italian for Goodnight) and Wilfred Ndidi are the main threats from midfield. El Khannouss and Buonanotte have created six big chances each while Ndidi has created five. Despite Leicester’s concerns, this trio will need to be kept quiet on Wednesday night.

The Boss

Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is the man in charge at the King Power Stadium. He took over in November after taking charge of United following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. At Old Trafford, he oversaw four matches, winning three and drawing one. After moving to Leicester, van Nistelrooy has taken charge of 18 matches, winning three and losing 14, giving him a win ratio of just 17%.

Last Meetings

In December, goals from Savinho and Haaland gave City a 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium to end a run of four matches without a win.

Leicester’s last visit ended in a 3-1 defeat and for a while, it looked like City would get a hatful. John Stones gave City the lead after just five minutes, Haaland added a 25th minute penalty and Bernardo Silva added a third on the stroke of half-time. The Blues took their foot off the pedal and allowed former Blue Kelechi Iheanacho to grab a second-half consolation goal.
