Socket AM4 still has so much to offer

AMD's Socket AM4 is arguably the most successful motherboard platform of all time. It gave users incredible upgrade options. While it's easy for tech enthusiasts to be enamored by the latest and greatest PC tech, it's easy to forget that there are millions of users with older PCs that are still perfectly capable of performing 2025 tasks.

Sometimes, we upgrade by choice. Sometimes, we are forced to due to a failure. Motherboards from a few years back are not immune. Many users will take the opportunity to upgrade a complete system. But for those on a budget, buying a new motherboard is far more cost-effective. The GIGABYTE B550 EAGLE WIFI6 is a new model from GIGABYTE. It's an affordable option that's perfect for users on a budget.

Building a new PC on either the AMD Socket AM5 or Intel LGA 1851 platforms means buying a new motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 memory. But, if you've already got a capable Ryzen 3000, 4000, or 5000 series CPU and accompanying DDR4, you can save a lot of money by simply buying a new motherboard. If you're a gamer, those savings could be put towards a higher-tier graphics card, which will boost gaming performance by more than upgrading to a current-generation CPU.

The GIGABYTE B550 EAGLE WIFI6 is a motherboard with more than a few useful features that are more suited to a current build. You get WiFi 6, a capable VRM and cooling, PCIe 4.0 support, some easy-DIY features, and lots of expansion support. Such a board might be the last Socket AM4 board you'll ever need.

Budget in price only - GIGABYTE's EAGLE WIFI 6 supports the most powerful AM4 processors

The GIGABYTE B550 EAGLE WIFI 6 supports a wide range of CPUs right out of the box. That includes powerful models like the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X and the long-time gaming favorite, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Most budget tier boards do as well, but there's usually an asterisk when it comes to supporting the higher TDP models. The B550 EAGLE WIFI6 includes a capable VRM and cooling apparatus to ensure the most powerful AM4 processors run without a hitch.

Higher TDP models require a capable VRM design, and the B550 EAGLE WIFI 6 includes a 10+3+1 phase digital VRM design. That includes ten phases for the CPU cores and three for the SoC, which incorporates the integrated GPU and memory controller. With ten phases, high core count Ryzen CPUs can be run at full capacity, while the three phases for the SoC ensure APUs like the Ryzen 7 5700G are able to fully utilize their strong onboard graphics without fear of stressing the VRM.

With a capable VRM comes the need for sufficient cooling. The B550 EAGLE WIFI 6 includes high surface area heatsinks for dissipating heat. These are accompanied by 5W / mk thermal pads, aiding heat transfer from the MOSFETS to the heatsinks. Additionally, the B550 EAGLE WIFI 6 includes five fan headers. Modern ATX cases with multiple installed fans can all be connected to the motherboard, ensuring a cool running system.

On the topic of cooling, the B550 EAGLE WIFI 6 includes a heatsink for the primary PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot. That is another feature that some boards in the $100 to $120 price range lack. A Gen 4 drive is typically not as demanding as a Gen 5 one, but it's still critical to keep any M.2 cool in order to stop it from throttling and preserve its lifespan.

Boost your network with WiFi 6 support

As the name suggests, the GIGABYTE B550 EAGLE WIFI6 has a key feature that comparable budget motherboards lack. That is, WiFi 6. That's if other budget boards even have onboard WiFi at all. WiFi 6 brings significant improvements over WiFi 5 (formerly known as 802.11ac). Other than improvements in speed, latency, range, and security, one of WiFi 6's biggest advantages is its ability to function smoothly in crowded environments.

WiFi 6 supports OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access) and MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output). With phones, tablets, laptops, and PCs all needing network access, a modern network needs the ability to handle more devices concurrently. Add a bunch of smart devices and WiFi 5 gets quickly overwhelmed, leading to speed and latency bottlenecks and frustratingly poor network performance.

The GIGABYTE B550 EAGLE WIFI6 is simply superior to WiFi 5 boards for almost every task, particularly in crowded homes or areas. Users can stream high-resolution video and games with lower latency and download at speeds beyond what WiFi 5 is able to achieve.

DIY-friendly features to make your build easier

The GIGABYTE B550 EAGLE WIFI6 brings some little touches to make your build easier. The WIFI EZ-Plug is a quick and easy way to install the WiFi antenna without the fiddly screw-in designs of old. Then there's the PCie EZ-latch, which makes removing the graphics card a simple process. In the case of the B550 EAGLE WIFI6, removing the graphics card makes it easier to access the PCIe expansion slots, which is particularly useful when working in the confines of a cramped case.

The B550 EAGLE WIFI6 includes Q-Flash BIOS upgrade support. Although the board supports the latest Ryzen AM4 CPUs from the very first BIOS release, AMD still released new AM4 CPUs in 2024, and it's possible it will release more models in the future. Having this feature means BIOS support for future CPU models can be added without requiring a currently available CPU. Such a feature is far from common on budget AM4 motherboards, particularly on older ones.

B550 is well worth it

Upgrading from a B450 board to a B550 one probably doesn't make much sense unless you require one of the aforementioned features, but if something happened to your old board, then choosing a B550 model like the B550 EAGLE WIFI6 makes sense for several reasons.

B550 is better optimized for Ryzen 5000 series processors. It generally supports faster memory, and perhaps most importantly, it supports PCIe 4.0. That last point is important for support for Gen 4 NVMe SSDs. There's another reason, too. Many entry-level graphics cards support PCIe 4.0 x4 or x8 connections, and running these at PCIe 3.0 can hinder performance, depending on the capabilities of the card and specific application.

There are some other features that may appeal. The B550 EAGLE WIFI6 features two addressable RGB headers and two RGB LED headers. Many budget B450 boards lack ARGB support, so if you fancy an attractive and well-lit system, it's just another reason to choose the B550 EAGLE over a B450 option.

The B550 EAGLE WIFI features a single HDMI 2.1 port on the back panel. This can be used with Ryzen G series processors. Though graphics specifications vary according to the CPU, this port allows 4K at 60Hz with HDR and FreeSync variable refresh rate support. Although the gaming performance of Radeon Vega graphics won't allow you to play modern titles with things like ray tracing enabled, having FreeSync over HDMI 2.1 will benefit players of esport titles or older games that don't require the grunt of a discrete graphics card.

These things add up. So, if you're on a budget, spending just a little bit extra on a board like the B550 EAGLE WIFI6 will give you superior specifications and a design that's better optimized for Ryzen 5000 series processors. Now that AM5 has taken over, the chances are you'll never have to buy another AM4 board again.

Not everyone has the desire or budget to upgrade their PC frequently. Thanks to the incredibly long life of the AM4 socket and the ability to drop in a later-generation 5000 series CPU, it's safe to say AM4 is far from obsolete. However, with many technologies integrated into the motherboard, bringing your PC up to spec with the GIGABYTE B550 EAGLE WIFI6 is possible. With WiFi 6, USB Type-C, support for the best Socket AM4 CPUs, high-quality cooling, and faster memory support, the B550 EAGLE WiFi 6 is a smart upgrade for those put off by the high cost of upgrading to an all-new platform.
