The White House said that President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs will go into effect “immediately” after he announces them on Wednesday. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt made the remarks on Tuesday during a press briefing, saying that the president’s historic action will improve American competitiveness in every area of industry, reduce the U.S.’ massive trade deficits and ultimately protect its economic and national security. Earlier on Tuesday, the White House announced that Trump will deliver remarks at a "Make America Wealthy Again Event" in the Rose Garden at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, or 5 a.m. Thursday in Korea time. Regarding speculations that Trump is considering imposing a universal 20 percent tariff on almost all imports, the spokesperson said that she doesn’t want to get ahead of the president.
She added that Trump said Monday that he has made a decision on the level of tariffs he will impose Wednesday and the world will find out in about 24 hours.
