In the past year, the Dallas Cowboys have signed market-setting deals with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, though neither negotiation went particularly smoothly. The Cowboys keep waiting until seemingly the last minute to get deals done, which only drives up the price.
Now, the front office’s focus is turned to their best player, superstar defensive end Micah Parsons, who will be entering his fifth season in the NFL this fall, the final year of his rookie deal after the Cowboys drafted him with the 12th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. On Tuesday, it was revealed thatCowboys owner Jerry Jones tried to get a deal done with Micah Parsons without his agent present, but Parsons rebuffed.
Despite playing much of his first season as a box linebacker and missing four games in 2024, Parsons has an impressive 52 sacks through his first four seasons in the NFL, while also notching 112 quarterback hits. If he’s not the best pure pass-rusher in the league, he’s second behind Myles Garrett. And, he will be 26 through all of next season. Considering he plays the second-most premium position in the NFL behind quarterbacks, he’s going to get a massive contract. Consider that Myles Garrett, who is 29, just got a four-year, $160 million deal. Micah Parsons’ next deal could pay him more than that annually.
Jerry Jones is trying to get a deal done without going through Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, according to Pro Football Talk
A report on Tuesday indicated that the Cowboys have offered to make Micah Parsons the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL and that Parsons has agreed to the framework of an extension.
The caveat is that the Cowboys have not included Parsons’s agent David Mulugheta in the talks and that Parsons won’t move forward with a final agreement without his involvement. Jones confirmed that he and Parsons have been speaking directly later in the day and explained why he’s chosen to handle things this way.
”I’m the one who has to write the check and Micah is the one who has to agree to it,” Jones said, via David Moore of the Dallas Morning News. “That’s the straightest way to get there. That’s the principle that’s involved here.”
Micah Parsons spoke out about this approach, and wasn’t a big fan of it.
Facts!! David is the best and I will not be doing any deal without @DavidMulugheta involved! Like anyone with good sense I hired experts for a reason. There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David! There will be no backdoors in this contract… https://t.co/nxKNSIXLvt

Jerry Jones somehow finds a way to irritate all of his star players, which ultimately just drives up the price. It’s not a winning formula, that’s for sure.
