Arsenal are nine points behind Liverpool with eight games remaining in the Premier League title race
Arsenal put a little bit of pressure on Liverpool in the Premier League title race with a 2-1 win over Fulham on Tuesday night. The Gunners are now nine points behind the Reds, who host Everton at Anfield in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night.
The Toffees could have a big say in the title race this week, as Mikel Arteta’s side make the trip to Goodison Park for the final time this weekend. Mikel Merino scored after 37 minutes to put Arsenal in front against Fulham before the returning Bukayo Saka came off the bench to add a second. It proved a key goal as Rodrigo Muniz netted for the visitors in the 94 minute.
Arsenal have eight games remaining to try and overhaul Liverpool’s lead and will be hoping for a favour from Everton to potentially re-ignite the title race between the clubs. The Gunners will be sweating on a potential injury to Gabriel, however, as he was forced off early on with a potential hamstring problem.
Arsenal final eight Premier League games compared to Liverpool
Once Liverpool’s match with Everton is complete, both sides will have eight league games remaining. As mentioned Everton are up next for Arsenal while Liverpool make the trip to Fulham this weekend. The Gunners host Brentford on April 12 while West Ham visit Anfield a day later. Both clubs are in action on April 20, as Arsenal head to Ipswich Town and the Reds visit Leicester City.
The Gunners were due to play Crystal Palace the following weekend (April 26 & 27) but that game will be rearranged after the Eagles reached the semi-final of the FA Cup. Liverpool are in action against Tottenham Hotspur on April 27. Arteta’s side kick May off with a home clash against Bournemouth while Arne Slot’s men head to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea. The two rivals then meet on Merseyside with the Gunners hoping enough results will have gone their way for the title race to still be alive.
Arsenal finish with games at home against Newcastle United and away to Southampton while Liverpool journey to Brighton and Hove Albion before taking on Crystal Palace in their final game at Anfield.
Arsenal keep title race alive
Former Brighton and Hove Albion striker Glenn Murray believes the Gunners’ win over Fulham has kept the title race alive heading into the final stretch. He said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Arsenal did enough first half. They were fortunate to break the deadlock through Mikel Merino's deflected strike that went past Bernd Leno and into the side netting. Second half the tempo dropped a bit in the stadium and the introduction of Bukayo Saka lifted the place. It was written in the stars that he would come on and score.
“From 2-0 onwards they sat in and invited Fulham onto them. They duly replied with a few opportunities, Rodrigo Muniz headed wide from a few yards out and Ryan Sessegnon headed straight at David Raya.
“Eventually they did get the goal through Muniz, via deflection, and it was a little nervy for the last few minutes. Arsenal saw it out though and that keeps the title race alive.”
