Alleged Russian Spy Captured in Poland During Joint Operation With Ukraine’s Sbu

Ukrainian and Polish authorities have detained a political analyst accused of working as a Russian agent to spread anti-Ukraine propaganda, Ukraine’s State Security Service (SBU) said Tuesday.

Kyrylo Molchanov, who has ties to pro-Kremlin Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk, was first arrested in Poland before being transferred to a detention center in Kyiv, the SBU said. Medvedchuk, who faces treason charges, is believed to be in Russia.

The SBU alleges that Russia’s intelligence agency, the FSB, and the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service recruited Molchanov to spread disinformation about Ukraine.

“On the instructions of the occupiers, he worked to discredit Ukraine internationally and destabilize its partner countries,” the SBU said in a statement.

Investigators claim Molchanov encouraged terrorist acts in Ukraine and used his Telegram channel to spread Russian intelligence propaganda.

According to the SBU, he frequently appeared on Kremlin-controlled media in 2022 and 2023, including on talk shows hosted by Vladimir Solovyov, where he justified Russia’s invasion and promoted false narratives about Ukraine.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
