Defender Diogo Dalot believes Manchester United did enough to win following Tuesday night's 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, insisting the team is "improving".

United's four-game unbeaten run was brought to an end following Anthony Elanga's brilliant winner after just five minutes on the banks of the Trent.

The Swede ran almost the full length of the pitch before firing a low effort past Andre Onana after Forest caught United on the break following an early corner.

United dominated the ball for long spells and went close to equalising either side of half-time, hitting the bar in the first half through Dalot before substitute Harry Maguire saw a last-gasp effort cleared off the line by Forest centre-back Murillo.

Despite the defeat in the Midlands signalling a disappointing start to the Premier League restart, Dalot is adamant United are continuing to move in the right direction.

Dalot, speaking to MUTV, said: "Obviously, we are frustrated. We did enough to win the game. We had very good moments, created a lot of chances and I think enough chances to win this game.

"At the end, a little detail defined the result. It is sometimes the price you pay in this type of level and type of competition. Sometimes, a distraction and a lack of focus can be really decisive, and today it was.

"I think it is something we can obviously look at and try to improve. But overall, I think we are improving, we are playing better, we are controlling more games with and without possession.

"That is something positive that we can take ahead of the coming games. But in the end, we need to start being more consistent in terms of results and winning more games."

United threw everything at Forest in the latter stages of the contest in the hope of finding a leveller, but the Midlands outfit stood firm to preserve their clean sheet. Dalot insists United's desire to keep going will stand them in good stead.

"It shows how much we want it and how much we want to change the situation and not be in the position that we are in, especially in the Premier League," added the Portuguese international.

"If we want to be competitive in the future, we have to start behaving like this and we have to perform like this. I then think results will come.

"These little bits will have to come first if you want to be competing for the Premier League and the biggest titles. We have to start creating these habits, trying to be consistent on that and then I think the results will come by themselves.

"We still have to suffer a little bit, but in terms of trying to get out of this situation and trying to improve, I think we are on the right track."
