Two winners and three losers as Manchester United lose 1-0 vs Nottingham Forest

Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, in a game Ruben Amorim’s side struggled to create clear-cut chances.

Still waiting for their first back-to-back wins in the Premier League this season, Manchester United fell short yet again, losing 1-0 to an in-form Nottingham Forest side.

Ruben Amorim’s side was blunt in attack as they failed to respond to Anthony Elanga opener 5 minutes into the game. The United academy graduate scored his first goal against his former club to take his tally to six for the season.

We take a look at the winners and losers from the game…

Winners

Leny Yoro: Although United’s defence didn’t cover itself in glory at the beginning of the match, Leny Yoro hardly stepped out of line throughout the game.

The Frenchman’s highlight came in the 83rd minute when Yoro did enough to prevent Elanga from getting in behind United’s defence again. The Swede kept the Reds on their toes, but our young French defender stood his ground as Forest inflicted a moment or two of pressure towards the end.

Mason Mount: Making his first appearance for United since December 2024, it was great to see Mason Mount return as he replaced Joshua Zirkzee after 78 minutes of play.

The midfielder almost made an instant impact when Nikola Milenkovic’s clearance found Mount on the edge of the box before a curled effort went just wide of the post.

Mount showed glimpses of what he brings to the team during his short cameo against Forest. He needs to build on this with more minutes and gradually a run of games without any setbacks.

Losers

Alejandro Garnacho: It was a frustrating night for Alejandro Garnacho, epitomised by his booking offence in the 65th minute when he kicked the ball away in frustration following an offside call.

The night started poorly for the Argentina international after he failed to take down Elanga ahead of Nottingham Forest’s early opener. Forest sat back after taking the lead and defended well to cancel out any attacking momentum from Garnacho on the flank.

Garnacho continued to frustrate by sending most of his shots over the bar. He was very wasteful on Tuesday night.

Patrick Dorgu: Although speed isn’t usually a problem for Patrick Dorgu, the Denmark international couldn’t keep up with Elanga for the opening goal.

Dorgu also failed to make his presence known in the final third.

Noussair Mazraoui: Like Garnacho and Dorgu, Noussair Mazraoui was partly responsible for Elanga’s goal when the former United winger ran two-thirds of the pitch, and none of the United defenders could keep up with him.

Mazraoui lost his balance up against the sheer pace and power of Elanga.
