And it did Atleti the world of good with the cup representing their last realistic shot at a trophy this season.
Diego Simeone's side were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid before crumbling to a 4-2 home defeat to Barcelona in La Liga to all but end their title hopes.
Los Colchoneros will not want a third trophy snapped from their grasp by an El Clasico side, as they seek to win the competition for the first time since 2013.
Barca themselves, however, can still clinch a remarkable treble - which they achieved in both 2009 and 2015.
The Blaugrana will be full of confidence they can pull it off having put together a 20-game unbeaten run in all competitions (W17, D3) since losing 2-1 in December's home league game against, none other than, Atleti.
