Elon Musk's days in the White House may be coming to an end. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO, who made his way to being a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, may just be on his way out.

Trump hinted on Monday that while Musk has to exit, the Department of Government Efficiency will continue to operate without the tech mogul from May onwards.

During a press conference on Monday, Trump told reporters - “I think he’s amazing but I also think he’s got a big company to run and so at some point he’s going to be going back," adding that Musk "wants to" go back.

"I’d keep him as long as I could keep him," he added.

As per a Politico report, Trump also stated that DOGE's key mission - firing tens of thousands of employees - will also be accomplished by May.

Musk was designated as a temporary government employee, which means he had a 130 day cap on his services at the White House. Based on this, his tenure is set to end by May.

With Musk's plans to exit, Trump told reporters at the White House that the influence of DOGE will "linger on" as agency heads got a "big education" from the experience.

"There will be a point at which the secretaries will be able to do this work," he added.

Last week, Musk addressed a gathering in Wisconsin in which he stated that its "costing" him a lot to head DOGE.

"What they're trying to do is put massive pressure on me, and Tesla, I guess, to stop doing this. My Tesla stock and the stock of everyone who holds Tesla have gone in half. It's a big deal," he said.
