Mark Clattenburg gives verdict on whether Casemiro could have been sent off for his reaction to yellow card

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro was outraged after he conceded a foul against Nottingham Forest.

Ruben Amorim’s struggles in the Premier League continued with Manchester United losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening.

Anthony Elanga haunted his former side, scoring just five minutes in after running 85 metres up the pitch on a counter-attack.

United battled hard to try and equalise with Diogo Dalot hitting the bar and Harry Maguire’s last-gasp effort cleared off the line.

But ultimately it was a frustrating evening for Amorim’s side, and for Casemiro, that frustration nearly boiled over.

Mark Clattenburg reacts to Casemiro incident vs Nottingham Forest

Early in the second half, Casemiro was booked for a challenge on Ryan Yates. The Brazilian exploded with anger in protest at the decision made by referee Jarred Gillett.

Casemiro continued to shout towards Gillett but he decided not to take any further action.

Speaking exclusively to United in Focus, former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg gave his verdict on the incident.

“Some people will argue that Casemiro is lucky not to receive a second yellow card for dissent. He’d already been cautioned earlier and clearly shows an act of frustration.

“There is a fine balance between frustration and dissent. We don’t know what was said between the referee and the player, but the player certainly goes toward Jarred Gillett’s space and therefore runs the risk of a yellow card.

“Probably inside the mindset of the referee, he’s trying to manage – one of the areas that Premier League referees seem to do is try to manage conflict situations and try to manage some forms of dissent.

“But he’s certainly ran the risk of getting a second yellow card and reducing Manchester United down to 10 players.

“It’ll all depend on the referee of course. Some referees manage some people, some of the younger referees certainly wouldn’t tolerate this and probably would have given Casemiro a second yellow card.

“It certainly depended on the referee on the day – Jarred Gillett is a very experienced referee and decided to manage this situation.”

Casemiro’s disciplinary record at Man United

Casemiro avoided a red this time around, but his disciplinary record as a Manchester United player shows he has often not been as lucky.

In his 116 appearances for the Red Devils, Casemiro has been sent off three times.

He has avoided red this season, with his yellow card against Forest his fifth of the season. But last season Casemiro was sent off against Galatasaray in the Champions League after picking up two yellow cards.

In the 2022/23 season, Casemiro received two red cards in the space of a month.
