Amorim unhappy with €45m United star amid Nottingham defeat

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim criticized Alejandro Garnacho, calling his performance “not that good” against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening. United lost the away game 1-0 to the tricky trees at City Ground, continuing their struggle in the Premier League.

Man United are currently 13th in the Premier League table and have only the Europa League to salvage something positive. A potential Europa League triumph for the Red Devils would help them qualify for the next season’s Champions League competition.

However, there are a lot of positives for the Red Devils despite their loss as they dominated the home side. United conceded a goal in the 5th minute of the game when their former academy player Anthony Elanga punished them.

They conceded eight shots throughout the game with two on target compared to their 23 shots with six on target. However, Man United failed to capitalize on their chances despite the superiority in most aspects of the game.

During the post-match press conference (via Manchester Evening News), Amorim criticized Garnacho for failing to contribute significantly in the final third for United. He said:

“He’s [Garnacho] making everything, he’s trying sometimes. You have one day [where] you are doing the right things but in the final third, you are not that good. That can happen. That can happen in the game. The most important thing for me is when he needs to run back, he’s running back. Of course, we want a player that has one against one. Sometimes he’s trying too much, he has (Patrick) Dorgu to make a movement but I think he wants to help the team in doing his best. Sometimes he doesn’t always make the best choice but you can point to any player today.”

Garnacho played next to Bruno Fernandes, behind Joshua Zirkzee, as the front three for Man United against Nottingham. While Fernandes delivered a strong performance, the young Argentine failed to be equally impactful with Zirkzee struggling ahead of him.

The 20-year-old has a current market value of €45.00m, according to Transfermarkt, something that would drop if he continues to struggle.

United let Antony and Marcus Rashford go on a loan deal during the January transfer window and the two players are thriving. The situation puts a lot of pressure on Amorim and players like Garnacho, who would face exit if they don’t improve.
