Man Utd welcomed a star back from injury in their 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.
Ruben Amorim has suggested he will use Mason Mount as one of the two attacking midfielders in his 3-4-2-1 formation after his return from injury last night. The 26-year-old returned to the Manchester United matchday squad for the win at Leicester before the March international break but had to wait until the trip to face Nottingham Forest for his return to action.
Mount was only on the pitch for 12 minutes at the City Ground but almost inspired United to a dramatic draw when he sent an effort just wide of the Forest goal. It was an encouraging cameo performance from the former Chelsea man and a reminder of what he can offer Amorim when he is fully fit.
Mount has only managed one goal and one assist in 33 appearances since he moved to Old Trafford two years ago, but he could have a key role to play under Amorim, who has already identified his best position in the United side.
Ruben Amorim drops Mason Mount hint
Speaking after the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, Ruben Amorim was quizzed on Mason Mount and where he thought he could fit into the Manchester United line up.
“If you look at the history of Mason Mount, he played in this system many times, especially in Chelsea, he played left-hand, right-hand [side],” he said in his post-match press conference. “So I think it’s a very good position for him.”
United spent £55 million to sign Mount from Chelsea in the 2023 summer transfer window after he had been identified as the top midfield target by manager Erik ten Hag. He has missed 50 matches through four separate injuries since he moved to Old Trafford, including two individual hamstring issues this season.
Before last night, Mount had not featured since the Manchester derby victory over Man City in December 2024, and he could return to the starting line up against the same opponents this weekend.
Ruben Amorim loves Mason Mount
Speaking last month, Ruben Amorim reiterated his belief in Mason Mount and insisted he had no doubts the 26-year-old could be a success for Manchester United.
“I have already said that I really love Mason Mount. Because I see him, I know how he suffers I know he does everything right, his physical aspect is perfect. He is trying too much, maybe he is thinking too much about everything.”
"He was a European champion. He is a talent, a really talented player. And when a player does everything like he does, he will always have the support of everybody here in the club. So we will try to manage the load. You have already seen some players that had a lot of problems, in some moments they can stay fit. I believe a lot in Mason Mount and we need players like Mason Mount.”
