Manchester United midfielder Casemiro exploded at Nottingham Forest skipper Ryan Yates who was laid out on the turf after his clattering tackle.
The Brazilian appeared to believe that Yates was attempting to con referee Jarred Gillett into showing him a red card for the late challenge.
Footage of the incident shows Casemiro yelling at the stricken Yates before turning his ire to the official who had brandished him with a yellow card. The 33-year-old protested his innocence, though, in truth, he was fortunate not to be shown a second yellow, such was the passion of his defence.
'Some people will argue that Casemiro is lucky not to receive a second yellow card for dissent,' former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg told United in Focus. 'He’d already been cautioned earlier and clearly shows an act of frustration.
'There is a fine balance between frustration and dissent. We don’t know what was said between the referee and the player, but the player certainly goes toward Jarred Gillett’s space and therefore runs the risk of a yellow card.
'Probably inside the mindset of the referee, he’s trying to manage – one of the areas that Premier League referees seem to do is try to manage conflict situations and try to manage some forms of dissent. But he’s certainly ran the risk of getting a second yellow card and reducing Manchester United down to 10 players.'

Casemiro was handed a rare start by Ruben Amorim on Tuesday night against Nottingham Forest.
United fell to their 13th league defeat of the campaign thanks to former player Anthony Elanga's fifth-minute strike.
The result leaves the club in 13th place, two points behind Crystal Palace who have two games in hand.
United welcome local rivals Manchester City to Old Trafford on Sunday before travelling to France to take on Lyon in the quarter-final of the Europa League.
