Report: Liverpool targeting summer move to sign 'top' Brazilian midfielder who Micah Richards loves

Midfield changes seem likely at Anfield this summer, with Arne Slot targeting reinforcements in the middle of the park.

Ryan Gravenberch’s emergence as a top number six has eased the need for an elite midfielder, but the Reds could still do with one or two in this area.

Wataru Endo’s expected departure also means there will likely be no backup for the Dutchman heading into next season – an issue Liverpool will no doubt have to address.

With Martin Zubimendi now off the table, it seems Slot’s side have turned their attention to another midfield target – namely Joao Gomes.

Liverpool eyeing up summer swoop for Joao Gomes

Gomes recently put pen to paper on a new deal at Molineux but that is not stopping Liverpool from pursuing the Brazilian.

That is according to Caught Offside, who claim the Reds are keeping a close eye on Gomes’ situation ahead of the summer window.

The report also states that Liverpool could even try and tempt Wolves into a sale, tabling a potential offer in the ‘region of £40m’.

Having just signed Gomes to a new contract, Wolves are in a strong position – especially with no reported release clause inserted in the deal.

Micah Richards is a big fan of Gomes

With Matheus Cunha likely to leave Wolves, the Molineux outfit may be wary of selling another of their prized assets this summer.

Despite the difficulty of the deal, Micah Richards’ past claims about Gomes – suggest it would still be wise for Liverpool to try their luck with an offer.

Speaking in March 2024, Richards sang the praises of the midfielder following his performance for Brazil during their 1-0 win against England.

“We have to give a quick shoutout to Gomes of Wolves,” the former defender said on the Rest is Football podcast.

“Oh my word, what a player he is by the way. I didn’t have the team-sheet and I didn’t have my glasses on and I was thinking, ‘who’s this guy?’ I couldn’t even see until I got my glasses on but Gomes, he is a player by the way.

“Obviously, we don’t get to see Wolves too much on TV. We see them on Match of the Day.

“Seeing him up close and personal, his touches, his anticipation when he’s winning the ball back and his weight of ball forward. Sorry Wolves fans, he’s going to the top that lad.”
