How Everton boss David Moyes can make history by beating Liverpool in the Merseyside derby

Everton make the short trip across Stanley Park this evening to face fierce rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

David Moyes‘ side head into the clash nine unbeaten, although, they’ve not picked up a win in any of their last four outings.

Moyes will have star player Iliman Ndiaye back and Dwight McNeil is expected to make the starting line-up for the first time this year.

McNeil has recovered from knee surgery and was pictured in first-team training during the March international break.

So, heading into the Anfield clash, Everton’s squad are in a much stronger position, giving Moyes a greater chance of bucking a remarkable 22-year trend.

David Moyes has never won a Premier League game at Anfield

Everton will indeed be the massive underdogs this evening, with Liverpool gunning for the Premier League title.

And, to add to that, Moyes has never won any of his 19 Premier League games at Anfield since his first clash against the Reds in 2002.

The Scotsman evidently has his bogey teams, but it’s even more motivation to get one over Arne Slot’s men tonight.

Everton currently hold the bragging rights, too, as they’ve won and drawn their last two meetings against Liverpool.

Moyes accepts it’ll be incredibly difficult tonight

Speaking in Tuesday’s press conference, Moyes accepted that it’ll be an incredibly difficult game this evening.

“Liverpool’s league position shows how they are playing,” the 61-year-old said.

“They’ve had a couple of tough games but that can happen. It’s a big game. It’s always been incredibly difficult to go to Anfield and get a result.

“But, we’ve got an opportunity to try again. It would be huge for us as a club to get that. It is not something we have done often.”

The last time Everton won at Anfield was during lockdown when games were played behind closed doors.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men came away 2-0 victors in February 2021.
