'He would be a joy' - Rene Meulensteen believes Man United have one player who would fit Real Madrid 'like a glove'

Manchester United are on course to finish in their lowest-ever Premier League position. Ruben Amorim’s latest defeat came away to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

Sitting 13th in the table, just three points above Spurs and Everton but having played a game more, the Red Devils are enduring a miserable campaign — their worst post-Sir Alex Ferguson.

One of the only positives has been the consistent form of Bruno Fernandes. The midfielder has been excellent and former coach Rene Meulensteen doesn’t want to think about where Ruben Amorim’s side would be without the Portugal international.

Man United told one player worthy of Real Madrid transfer

Fernandes has directly contributed to a massive 32 goals in 45 games, in all competitions, this season. His 16 goals and 16 assists have proven invaluable amid the forward’s struggles to find the back of the net.

As a result of his impressive output, Fernandes has been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid, and Meulensteen believes the reports make sense with the United captain a perfect replacement for Luka Modric.

“You do hear the rumours, at least that’s what I hear that obviously Real Madrid might be interested in him, which I can see because [Luka] Modric is obviously getting older and I think he would fit like a glove in that Real Madrid team,” he told talkSPORT.

“And I tell you what — with all the players around him with all his passing range, he would just be a joy, but I do think Bruno is very committed to Manchester United and I think they can’t afford to lose him but it needs strengthening all around.”

‘Unsellable’ Fernandes won’t go anywhere

Although Fernandes is under contract until 2028, Manchester United’s financial problems might make him an attainable option for the likes of Real Madrid.

Ironically, the Red Devils cannot afford to offload him though. Amorim has already said Fernandes is unsellable — an undeniable fact considering the rest of the squad’s struggles.

Unfortunately for Carlo Ancelotti, if the Italian is serious about signing Fernandes, Los Blancos will need to pay well, well over the odds.

And that is incredibly unlikely as receiving unimaginable transfer fees isn’t something United are known for — in fact, they’re usually the ones burning the cash.
