Man City legend Sergio Aguero scores beauty for Independiente seniors - he's not lost 'an ounce …

Sergio Aguero is a legend of football – and the former Manchester City striker rolled back the years with the Independiente seniors, after temporarily coming out of retirement.

The Argentine hung up his boots in 2021, after a spell with Barcelona was cut short due to a heart issue.

Before that, though, Sergio Aguero had enjoyed 10 successful years at Manchester City, where he established himself as one of the greatest strikers on the planet.

Aguero – described by Erling Haaland as Man City’s best-ever striker – won 15 trophies during his time at the Etihad Stadium, including five Premier League titles.

He left as the club’s record goalscorer, bagging 260 across all competitions.

There were lots of tears when Aguero left the club in 2021, not least from manager Pep Guardiola, who famously said ‘We cannot replace him’ during an emotional interview after City’s title celebrations.

It was very sad to see Aguero forced into retirement, and those scenes of him clutching his heart during Barcelona’s game against Deportivo Alaves were very worrying at the time.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning (UK time), the 36-year-old actually came out of retirement to play for his old club Independientein the Senior Classic.

He played for their seniors side against Racing.

The game finished 3-3, and Aguero – who started the game – actually managed to get on the scoresheet, with La Nacion reporting that he showed he had not lost ‘an ounce of skill’.

With Independiente trailing, Aguero picked the ball up on the edge of the area, shimmied by one defender before coming inside again and curling a beautiful strike into the far corner.

This was actually the second time Aguero has pulled on the Independiente shirt since retiring, after he did so in March 2024 during an event called ‘La Noche del Rey’.

That time, he only played a handful of minutes, before going off after a bad fall.

Aguero also appeared in a seven-a-side soccer tournament in the US back in June 2024.

What Man City legend Sergio Aguero said about coming out of retirement properly

Back in February, there had been some speculation about Aguero coming out of retirement properly and playing football professionally again.

But fans can sadly forget that happening, with the 36-year-old being quoted as saying (via Goal): “It’s totally a lie, I’m not going to train with Independiente.

“Sometimes things are invented. I reiterate that the cardiologist said that I am well and that it is important that I am in good health. But to return to training at the First Division level, I would need to undergo a lot of tests.”

Prior to those comments, Independiente manager at the time Carlos Tevez – Aguero’s former striker partner at Man City and Argentina – had extended an open invite to him to train with the team.

But it seems for now that Aguero won’t be coming back to the game properly, although fans will no doubt hope to see more cameos here and there.
