Greek premier announces $27B transformation of country’s defense strategy

**ATHENS**

Greece’s prime minister on Wednesday unveiled what he called “the most drastic transformation in the history of the country’s armed forces,” announcing a €25 billion ($27 billion) investment in a new national defense strategy.

Addressing parliament, Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the strategy will rest on two main pillars: the integration of advanced technologies and the active involvement of Greece’s domestic defense industry.

“We are now dealing with a different war than the one we knew – at least the one for which the armed forces were potentially ready to wage,” he said.

“Unmanned vehicles, roving munitions, drones … the use of artificial intelligence, and an emphasis on cyberattacks – all of these are technologies must now be integrated into the long-term planning of the armed forces.”

He stressed the importance of “Greek added value,” noting that local defense companies will participate in all upcoming Defense Ministry programs.

Greek officials have pointed to the major successes in recent years of the defense industry in neighboring Türkiye, which has both reduced the need for imported weapons and defense systems and attracted eager buyers in other countries.

Mitsotakis also cited broader geopolitical challenges – including strained US-EU relations, instability in the Middle East, and the ongoing war in Ukraine – as further reasons to modernize Greece’s military capabilities.

He said strengthening the armed forces’ deterrence, readiness, and combat capabilities is a top priority for his government.
