New Pittsburgh Steelers star wide receiver DK Metcalf requested a trade out of the Seattle Seahawks multiple times before landing with the Steelers.
Brady Henderson of ESPN says the Seahawks never intended to trade Metcalf this offseason, but did once his repeated angst within the organization came to a head. That forced them to move him to the Steelers.
“The trade request that led the Seahawks to send DK Metcalf to Pittsburgh last month wasn’t the first time he asked out of Seattle. According to team sources, the star receiver had requested trades multiple times in recent offseasons. That revelation sheds light on Seattle’s decision to deal Metcalf to the Steelers for the No. 52 selection and a swap of late-round picks. The Seahawks didn’t plan on trading him at the start of the offseason, but they had to weigh Metcalf’s prolonged unhappiness in addition to the inherent risk of signing a player to a massive third contract,” Henderson wrote.
Metcalf never planned to come to Pittsburgh, either. The Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans were the two teams he wanted to be traded to at the time, but the Steelers were the team that came in aggressively and sold Metcalf on their vision of the team.
Metcalf’s role with the Steelers should be that of a vertical threat. That will complement George Pickens, who is in a similar vein to a wide receiver. The Steelers still lack a quarterback, though, and even as they pursue Aaron Rodgers, it is still not a guarantee they land him. Regardless, Metcalf is set to be the new superstar on the Steelers’ offense.
