Everton are heading to Anfield for the second Merseyside derby of the season on Wednesday.

The Toffees successfully held Arne Slot’s men to a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park in the reverse fixture.

James Tarkowski smashed home a dramatic late equaliser in February, before Abdoulaye Doucoure was sent off for sparking a melee by celebrating in front of the Liverpool supporters.

The Blues are now hoping to provide a stumbling block to Liverpool, who are closing in on the Premier League title.

Doucoure issues rallying call to Everton fans ahead of Liverpool

Docoure has made three Premier League appearances since the last Merseyside derby and notched a goal and an assist when the Toffees drew 2-2 with Manchester United on 22 February.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Mali international wrote on X: “Derby Day”, accompanied by a photo of Everton fans at the last derby.

Everton should be able to frustrate Liverpool at Anfield

The Toffees do not boast the same amount of sheer quality among their ranks as local rivals Liverpool, who enjoy the services of the likes of Mohamed Salah.

The wider footballing world will expect the Reds to triumph over Moyes’ men.

Docucoure will hope to have an impact v Liverpool

But, as shown in the last Merseyside derby, Everton boast plenty of grit and determination and will believe that they are capable of beating Slot’s league leaders.

The Toffees have enjoyed a nine-game unbeaten run heading to Anfield and will not want to give up that record anytime soon, let alone against their local rivals.

Under Moyes, Everton have established a strong mentality, which may be enough to help them yield a draw at Anfield and could even be enough to earn a win over Slot’s men.

Remarkably, the Toffees boss is yet to win a Merseyside derby on away soil, despite previously managing the Blues from 2002-2013.

But there would be no better time to break such a poor record while Liverpool are intent on strengthening their grip on the Premier League title.
