Hull City could risk losing 26-year-old star in 2025 amid contract situation: Opinion

Hull City signed midfielder Steven Alzate on a free transfer last summer, bringing him in after his Brighton contract expired.

Hull City are currently prioritising the fight for Championship survival. HCAFC sit 20th in the table as it stands, three points above the drop zone.

The Tigers are set for a nervy end to the season and the majority of key figures will be focused on on-pitch matters for the coming weeks. That will certainly be the case for Ruben Selles, his coaching staff and players.

However, the club hierarchy need to have an eye on the long-term too. Regardless of how this season ends, they need to be prepared for the summer window, both in terms of signings to target and what awaits their current crop of players.

One man whose future could come into focus is that of Steven Alzate, despite his fairly recent arrival.

Contract situation could prompt interest

Hull City signed Alzate to an initial two-year deal back in September and included a 12-month extension option in the agreement. It effectively means his future is in their hands until 2027.

However, even with the option in place, it is not out of the question that the former Brighton prospect’s situation prompts interest in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Alzate has impressed in the midfield for a struggling Championship side this season. Many felt he was a player capable of contributing at the top end of the table upon arrival, so battling it out in the lower reaches of the division likely won’t interest him again next season.

Clarity over his long-term future could be sought too, especially if admirers come knocking. Clubs could smell opportunity and it leaves HCAFC susceptible to bids.

Make an early move

To show Alzate their faith in his abilities and importance to the Hull City side, the club hierarchy should act fast to give him a long-term contract once the campaign comes to an end.

Moving early removes the uncertainty heading into the summer transfer window and gives the player the security he deserves. In turn, the Tigers fend off potential interest in someone who could be a big asset, both financially and in terms of what he offers on the pitch.

There may be more pressing matters for HCAFC to deal with on the contract and transfers front, but Alzate is a valuable player and his situation should be one under consideration ahead of the window.
