The Presidents Office/Republic of Maldives
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has embarked on a high-profile visit to Liverpool this week as part of a landmark tourism partnership between the island nation and Liverpool Football Club.
The collaboration, formalized two weeks prior through a multi-year agreement designating Visit Maldives as the club’s “Official Tourist Destination Partner,” seeks to amplify the archipelago’s global visibility while aligning with shared sustainability goals.
The President’s itinerary includes a behind-the-scenes tour of Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre, meetings with Maldivian students in the UK, and discussions on integrating football-driven tourism strategies into the Maldives’ economic planning.
The partnership, spanning 3.5 years, leverages Liverpool FC’s global fanbase of over 200 million followers and its status as the Premier League’s most-watched club to position the Maldives as a premier travel destination
A focal point of the trip is the delegation’s tour of Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre, where Maldivian officials aim to adapt elite football training methodologies to bolster the nation’s sports academies.
Accompanied by Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu, the President will also convene with Maldivian students through the Liverpool Guild’s Maldivian Society, reinforcing educational and cultural ties.
Additionally, during the visit, key Maldivian ministers will engage with senior officials from Liverpool FC’s sustainability initiative, The Red Way, and the LFC Academy.
These discussions will focus on joint marketing strategies aimed at promoting tourism and enhancing the partnership between the Maldives and Liverpool FC.
A representative of Maldives, Mr Ibrahim Shiuree, said of the original agreement with Liverpool when it was announced:
“Partnering with a club as iconic as Liverpool FC, who share our core values to drive positive change towards a more sustainable future, is a proud moment for Visit Maldives.”
“Together, we’ll be able to offer exclusive opportunities and experiences, bringing the magic of the Maldives to millions of passionate fans around the world. We’re particularly thrilled about the MyLFC competition and the chance to give one lucky fan the trip of a lifetime in the Sunny Side of Life.”
