Jamie Carragher says he suspects Harry Kane will return to the Premier League and break Alan Shearer’s all-time goalscoring record in the future.
Kane currently sits second in the charts having found the back of the net 213 times across 11 seasons in the English top flight with boyhood team Tottenham.
But Shearer’s staggering total of 260 goals – accumulated over his spells with Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle – appears safe for the time being, with Kane bringing his stay with Spurs to an end to join Bayern Munich in August 2023.
While Kane was denied a first major trophy in his debut season with Bayern, the England captain has enjoyed a seamless transition into German football, scoring 77 goals in his opening 83 appearances for the Bundesliga giants.
Reports this week, though, suggested Kane was ‘seriously considering’ a return to England and Liverpool have been mooted as a possible option for the 31-year-old.

But Kane wasted little time in distancing himself from these rumours, insisting he remained ‘extremely happy’ and excited for the future at Bayern, with two-and-a-half years left on the striker’s current deal at the Allianz Arena.
Asked whether there was any part of him that would like to return home in the future, Kane told ESPN: ‘I’m not sure. I’ve said throughout my whole career that I’m not someone who likes to think too far ahead.

‘I’m extremely happy here, we have a fantastic team, fantastic coaching staff.
‘And I just feel like whilst I feel like I’m in the best condition, I want to play at the highest level possible and this is as high as it gets.
‘I know a lot can change in football in a short space of time and things can happen, but ultimately my focus is here.
‘I’m not thinking about any other league or any other team and, with football, I like to just go with the flow and at the moment, the flow is here at Bayern Munich.’

Kane stressed that he had no idea where the ‘random’ stories over his future had come from, with Bayern battling it out for silverware both domestically and in the Champions League this season.
However, Carragher is confident Kane will still have one eye on Shearer’s record and would not be surprised to see the forward join a mid-table club to give himself a chance of breaking it down the line.
‘I think he will come back. It might be tough to beat his [Shearer’s] record,’ the ex-Liverpool and England defender said on the It’s Called Soccer podcast.
‘I just think about what type of club he would go back to, if it wasn’t a top club.

‘You know what? I could see Harry Kane playing for maybe not a… Tottenham may think, “Okay, maybe we’re not going to pay someone a fee”, or something, I don’t know.
‘But maybe if he went down to a mid-table Premier League club, you could easily see him getting 10 to 15 goals-a-season.
‘And you know what? I think he’d just drag it out and keep playing and playing and playing until he beat that record. I think he will.’

Carragher joked Kane would be prepared to accept £500-a-week wages from a team scrapping at the bottom of the Premier League to haul himself past Shearer’s tally.
He added: ‘He might just be one of them: he goes to a mid-table club and then he goes to a club fighting relegation and then he goes to a club that have come up.
‘And then he just keeps signing for free and he says, “You know what? I’ll play for £500-a-week as I just need to beat this record of Alan Shearer’s!”.’

Kane is England’s greatest ever striker, says Carragher (Picture: Getty)
According to Carragher, the Bayern attacker has now surpassed Shearer, Gary Lineker and Wayne Rooney as England’s greatest striker in the history of the game.
‘I think he is England’s greatest ever striker, I said that a few weeks ago,’ the 2005 Champions League winner continued.
‘The competition is probably Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker… Wayne Rooney is a funny one because when I think of strikers I don’t really think of Wayne. I class Wayne as more of an all-round player so maybe the answer to that is Wayne Rooney.
‘But I’m going to stick with Harry Kane. He’s got more goals than anybody for England, before we go any further with that.
‘He’s played in England teams that have got to two finals.
‘Obviously, we know we’ve won the World Cup… Jimmy Greaves was part of that but he didn’t play in the final, Geoff Hurst I don’t think was the quality of Harry Kane.
‘Jimmy Greaves would probably be right up there as well but I think what Harry Kane has done in terms of his goals in the Premier League and I think if he’d stayed in the Premier League, he would have beaten Alan Shearer’s record.’
Will Kane go past Shearer's record in the future?
