Aston Villa will reportedly look to sign 26-year-old Argentine international Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Football Transfers, Cristian Romero is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are scouring the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window and have set their sights on the Tottenham Hotspur defensive mainstay. Meanwhile, the North London club will demand around £55 million to part ways with the Argentine international.
Cristian Romero and his excellent showings for Tottenham
Cristian Romero has come leaps and bounds since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Atalanta. The North London outfit initially signed the South American defender on a season-long loan deal in the summer transfer window of 2021 before sealing a permanent deal in August 2022.
The 26-year-old has turned out over 100 times thus far for Tottenham while chipping in with seven goals and one assist. However, while Romero has enjoyed success with Argentina by winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the last two Copa America titles, trophies have eluded him during his spell with Tottenham.
That might be the catalyst for a possible summer departure, with recent reports claiming he is ready to part ways with the North London club. The situation has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. However, Aston Villa will aim to beat the competition to the Argentine international defender’s signature in the summer transfer window.
Will Romero leave Spurs soon?
Aston Villa’s interest in Cristian Romero is understandable. The Villans are combing the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window. Axel Disasi might not complete a permanent move to the West Midlands club after his loan deal ends. In addition, Tyrone Mings is on the wrong side of 30.
So, several centre-backs, including Yusuf Akcicek, have emerged on Aston Villa’s radar, with Romero also a viable target for the Premier League club. Meanwhile, Tottenham will demand a premium to part ways with the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner, slapping a price tag of £55 million on him.
The price tag should not pose a problem, and Aston Villa should have the funds to afford a move for the 26-year-old Argentine international. However, Aston Villa will not be alone in the battle, with Napoli, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid also keen on signing the £55 million-rated Tottenham defender.
