Ruben Amorim makes Mason Mount admission after eagerly awaited return, it means more options for Man Utd in new system

Mason Mount made his eagerly awaited return against Nottingham Forest after the Manchester United midfielder spent four months out with injury.

The 26-year-old has not played since Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Manchester City on December 15 due to a hamstring tear.

On Tuesday night, United lost 1-0 against Nottingham Forest, but it marked the return of Mason Mount, who came off the bench for 12 minutes.

United need to dust off the cobwebs after their 13thPremier League defeat of the season before hosting City at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ruben Amorim’s side need to start winning matches if they aim to climb out of the bottom half of the league table before the 2024/25 campaign ends.

It will only help United’s head coach if more players return from injury. However, Matthijs de Ligt is an injury concern after being spotted limping as he left the City Ground after the match.

Ruben Amorim happy to have Mason Mount back

Since arriving at Old Trafford, Amorim has made it no secret that he admires Mount as a player.

It was a boost for the entire United first-team to welcome Mount back into the frame on Tuesday night because it gives Amorim more options moving forward.

More United News

Mount returned to the matchday squad for United’s 3-0 win over Leicester City before the international break, although the England international did not come off the bench.

The former Chelsea star was only on the pitch for 12 minutes against Forest, but he showed glimpses of brilliance, including a curled shot that went close shortly after coming off the bench.

Amorim explains how Mount is perfectly suited to United’s new system after watching the midfielder closely during his time at Stamford Bridge.

“If you look at the history of Mason Mount, he played in this system many times, especially in Chelsea, he played left-hand, right-hand [side],” Amorim told MUTV.

“So I think it’s a very good position for him.”

Mount has missed a lot of football since joining United and will hope to get a run of games together between now and the end of the season.

Mount gives Amorim more options

Mount’s availability is a big plus for Amorim ahead of games against Manchester City, Lyon and Newcastle over the next two weeks.

It means United have another midfield option to fulfil one of the No 10 roles, with Amorim explaining that Mount can play on the left or right.

He could also take up a deeper position in midfield like Bruno Fernandes has done under the Portuguese head coach.

Mount wasn’t the only United player to return for the 1-0 defeat to Forest. Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro were able to feature, while Altay Bayindir was also back in the squad after a long spell out.

United are still waiting for Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw to return.
