George McCaskey Reveals Ownership Plans Following Virginia’s Death

The Chicago Bears were plunged into their first real ownership flux earlier this year when Virginia McCaskey passed away at the age of 102. Not since the death of her father, George Halas, in 1983 had there been uncertainty about the direction at the top of the organization. It’s remarkable how stable things have been for the Bears going back over a hundred years. Some have wondered if that was about to change. Rumors have persisted that some of the younger generation in the family prefer to sell the team. George McCaskey finally got his chance to clarify the situation.

The team chairman spoke with the media at the annual NFL Owners Meetings. He discussed various topics, including the decision to vote for banning the infamous Tush Push play. Inevitably, the subject came around to the ownership situation. McCaskey didn’t beat around the bush. He made it clear that there is zero intention of selling the team. His mother spent a lot of time preparing her children for what to do after she passed in order to keep the franchise in the family. That is what he intends to do.

George McCaskey has stuck to his guns.

Since the conversation started years ago, he’s made it clear that there was never any intention of selling the team. The goal has always been to maintain the Halas lineage by keeping the Bears in the bloodline. While he understands people are upset with him because of the team’s struggles in recent years, that won’t stop him from trying to get things turned around. His love for the franchise has never wavered. If nothing else, fans can at least take solace in knowing that George McCaskey cares about the Bears, which might not be the case with a new owner. They would likely see it as nothing more than a cash cow to milk for maximum profits. The McCaskeys believe in what the Bears stand for, what Halas built all those years ago. That legacy will continue into the future.
