'I knew': Dan Burn shares how he really felt after his first training session with Harry Kane…

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn looked right at home in an England shirt.

It has been an unbelievable few weeks for Dan Burn, who followed up scoring in Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup win by making his England debut.

Burn impressed in England’s win over Albania, as Thomas Tuchel kicked off his reign as Three Lions boss with victory.

Tuchel’s decision to include Burn in his squad came as a huge surprise, but the 32-year-old certainly justified the former Chelsea manager’s decision.

However, the Newcastle United centre-back did feel slightly nervous before his first training session.

Dan Burn recalls his first England training session

That is what Burn has told Newcastle United’s official website, having spoken about his England experience ahead of the Magpies’ Premier League clash with Brentford.

“You don’t want to feel it of your depth,” he said.

“But as soon as I got through that session, I was like, ‘ah, I’m sweet’.

“Don’t get us wrong – the standard was ridiculously high, but nothing I didn’t feel as if I could cope with. I knew once I got through that first session, I’d back myself in training so I could give myself a chance to play. I felt as if it was a clean slate for everyone.”

Dan Burn has top level teammates at Newcastle United too

Burn trained alongside England superstars Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, but did not feel out of his depth. That is a testament to the defender, whose remarkable rise is well documented.

But while Burn admits that the standard in training was ‘ridiculously high’, he is no stranger to working alongside top level talent.

He does it every day at Newcastle United. Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali are all elite footballers, and Burn has the honour of calling them his teammates.

But they are lucky to have Burn as a teammate too. The man from Blyth has been exceptional this season, and scored arguably the most important goal in the club’s history.

Burn’s header against Liverpool at Wembley was thunderous, and it set Newcastle United on their way to ending their trophy drought.

Not only is Dan Burn an England international, he is also a Newcastle United legend. He could even become an England legend if he is included in Tuchel’s 2026 World Cup squad and helps bring football home.
