The Pittsburgh Steelers’ plan seems to be pairing Aaron Rodgers with DK Metcalf and George Pickens, but it is fair to question how those personalities will fit together on a day-to-day basis and over the course of a season.
One executive thinks the plan is a disaster, and is a sign of panic from the Steelers in general.
"Rodgers with Pickens and DK, if it’s not ‘Hard Knocks,’ it had better be,” an exec said to the Athletic’s Mike Sando. “I can’t think of a worse combination for all this to play out. In what world do you look at DK and go, ‘Let’s give that guy ($30 million) a year and trade a 2 for him?’ That struck me as, you are in on Brandon Aiyuk, you’ve been in on all these guys, you have not gotten them, and you finally found one. Maybe Tomlin brings out the best in him. I could see elements of why they like it. Pairing him with Rodgers seems odd.”
The Steelers have talked up adding Metcalf, who they view as a dynamic player down the field, and paired with Pickens, could be the premier field-stretching duo in the NFL. Yet, it will have to come with a level-headedness in the locker room that would work week in and week out.
For the Steelers, in general, the offense has to play much better if they want to break out of the rut they are in as a team. They have not won a playoff in nearly a decade, and that streak is waning on the organization, which is known for its historical success.
