The Linc - Jeffrey Lurie defends the tush push, endorses Nick Sirianni, and more

Let’s get to thePhiladelphia Eagles links ...

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie fires back at Tush Push detractors - NBCSP

“You know what?” Lurie said. “I remember reading about the forward pass and they said it really was an odd play that is no part of American football. It was controversial when the forward pass came out. I think aestheticism is very subjective. I’ve never judged whether a play looks, OK. Does a screen pass look better than an in-route or an out-route? I don’t know. To me, it’s not a very relevant critique that it doesn’t look right or something like that. I don’t know what looks right. Scoring. We like to win and score.” The Eagles spent the week at The Breakers fighting for a play that they have been able to perfect, unlike most of the other teams who have tried it. They’ll likely continue to battle for it going into the meetings in May. Although it seems possible all these efforts might be in vain if the league wants to return to pre-2004 rules, which prohibited pushing or pulling on all plays. “I don’t ever remember a play being banned because a single team or a few teams were running it effectively,” Lurie said. “It’s part of what I think I personally, and I think most of us love about football, is it’s a chess match. Let the chess match play out. “And if for any reason it does get banned, we will try to be the very best at short yardage situations. We’ve got a lot of ideas there, but I think it’s a credit to using our personnel in a way. There aren’t that many teams that have 600-pound squat quarterbacks and that offensive line. Listen, if there were any injury concern, I would be concerned.”

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie indicates Nick Sirianni extension is coming - NFL.com

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni went from the hot seat to the precipice of a long-term extension. Eagles owner and CEO Jeffrey Lurie indicated this week that an extension for Sirianni, who enters the final year of his contract, is on the way following Philly’s Super Bowl run. “Yeah, superb job. I mean, Nick’s going to be our coach and we don’t talk publicly [about contracts], never have,” Lurie said Tuesday from the Annual League Meeting. “You guys, I’m sure, will find out soon enough that Nick will be our coach going forward, and he’s done an outstanding job.”

Eight takeaways from Jeffrey Lurie’s ‘State of the Eagles’ address - PhillyVoice

6) Lurie discussed the decision to accept an invitation from ‘the White House.’ “We just felt this is a time honored tradition being invited by the White House. So there was no reticence whatsoever. To be celebrated at the White House is a good thing. There were special circumstances back then that were very different, and so this was kind of an obvious choice and look forward to it. “When you grow up and you hear about, ‘Oh, the championship team got to go to the White House,’ that’s what this is. And so we didn’t have that opportunity and now we do. I think we’re all looking forward to it.” #JimmySays: When asked what he would say to the fans who take offense to embracing the current president, Lurie said, “This is really just an invitation from the White House. That’s all this is, and we’re not politicizing it in any way.” Lurie also noted that it’s an optional event that Eagles players can choose to attend, or not.

Jeffrey Lurie speaks: The Eagles owner on Nick Sirianni’s future, post-Super Bowl strategy, White House visit, Tush Push & more - PHLY

The Eagles are conscious of their cash spending this offseason. The explanation has been that they must prepare for upcoming contracts. This was Lurie’s position on Tuesday, and he said “I know only one way” — but he also said if they pay every player market value, they cannot keep their best young players. The suggestion was the approach this offseason is a matter of strategy more than savings. “We want to win and we want to win big,” Lurie said. “The way to win consistently and to win big is to plan for the contracts you’re going to have to give to your best young players, and we want to retain our best young players as we go forward. It’s impossible if you draft well to do that. We want to make sure we’re aggressive at being able to sign players early that we think are core players for the future. “In the NFL, the way the salary cap system works is it’s based on a certain percentage. The average team should not have a surplus of players they have to sign. When you’re an excellent team, you should certainly have a surplus of players that you have on your roster. So my hope is we will always draft well, we will always have a surplus and we will always continue to figure out who and who and what opportunities you need to try to sign players 12 months out, 24 months out and prepare for that so that you’re never in a situation of drafting an excellent young player and preferring to keep them and have no way to keep them.”

Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni discuss Dallas Goedert’s uncertain future with the Eagles - BGN

The Eagles have been reportedly looking for a trade partner to offload TE Dallas Goedert since before the start of free agency. Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni spoke to reporters at the NFL annual meeting, and they both were complimentary of their veteran player while acknowledging the future is a bit uncertain. Roseman acknowledged there was no update as far as what the future might hold with the TE, but his response left the door open for a move to be made.

2025 NFL owners meeting: Latest buzz from Palm Beach - ESPN

The Eagles did nothing this week to signal their intention to keep tight end Dallas Goedert on the roster; if anything, their comments pointed in the other direction. “Right now, he’s on our football team,” coach Nick Sirianni said, when asked whether he wants Goedert back. Sirianni went on to laud Goedert as a player and leader and said he wants all players who contributed to the Super Bowl season back, but added, “There’s more to it than that.” Money is at the root of the potential departure. The 30-year-old is in the final year of a deal that averages $14 million per season. The Eagles have signed a number of players to big-money contracts in recent years, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, receiver A.J. Brown, running back Saquon Barkley and linebacker Zack Baun. With only so much cash to go around, they’re making some tough choices this offseason on contributors with sizable salaries who haven’t been identified as core options moving forward. Goedert’s injury history (he has missed three-plus games in each of the past three seasons) appears to be working against him in that regard. Outside of him taking a pay cut, it’s hard to envision Goedert returning to Philly in 2025.

Nick Sirianni declares it’s time to turn the page, ‘the celebration is over’ - PE.com

On Monday evening in South Philadelphia, Saquon Barkley and Brandon Graham threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Phillies’ home opener, showcasing the Lombardi Trophy in front of nearly 45,000 fans. Head Coach Nick Sirianni, in Palm Beach, Florida for the NFL Annual Meeting, understands that there are going to be some special occasions in the months to come to commemorate and celebrate the franchise’s second Super Bowl Championship, but it’s time to get back to business. “The celebration is over. The celebration of the Super Bowl is over. Our preparation is here,” Sirianni told reporters Tuesday morning at the NFC Coaches Breakfast. “There’s nothing like getting back in there and starting to work again.”

On the tush push, what does Roger Goodell want? - PFT

But the context is obvious. It’s all about taking away something the Eagles do better than anyone. And the goalposts are moving from safety to aesthetics to justify the basic reality that some teams don’t like the fact that the Eagles are kicking everyone’s ass. Why would the Commissioner care about that? Parity is good for the NFL. If fans of the other 31 teams believe the Eagles will continue to run roughshod over the league — fueled by a go-to move that makes short-yardage plays a near-automatic win — those fans might be less engaged in all things football. To be as popular as possible, and to make as much money as possible, the league needs to have all fans of all teams believe that every team has a chance, every year. Currently, there’s a small handful of true contenders. And the Eagles stand out among them. On the heels of back-to-back Super Bowl wins by the Chiefs, we’re looking at two (and maybe three) in a row by the Eagles. That’s reason enough for the Commissioner to want to stir things up. To give more teams a chance. And to take away the cheat code that is available to all teams but only one of which has figured out.

Jerry Jones talking about Micah Parsons’ agent: ‘I don’t know his name’ - Blogging The Boys

For the most part this offseason Jerry Jones has stayed out of the public limelight. Jerry did not speak at the NFL Combine which was a rarity for him. Prior to Tuesday his only comments in any sort of public capacity came at the retirement press conference for Zack Martin and that was obviously an understandable thing. It feels appropriate that Tuesday was April Fool’s Day. While in Florida for the NFL owners meetings Jerry Jones finally had a chance to speak on a number of things. As you can imagine the subject of Micah Parsons and his pending would-be contract extension arose, and Jerry noted that he and Parsons have been talking to one another... one on one. This caused a bit of a reaction from people as it doesn’t seem to be the best way to go about business. In defending the nature of these negotiations Jerry said something rather bold - that he doesn’t even know the name of Micah Parsons’ agent.

Field Yates mock draft: Another vote for Shedeur Sanders to New York Giants - Big Blue View

Round 1 (No. 3) — Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado. It is interesting to me that both Feldman and Yates, well-connected analysts, have the Giants grabbing Sanders. I said on Wednesday’s ‘Valentine’s Views’ podcast that I believe head coach Brian Daboll will be the biggest voice in the room when it comes to a quarterback selection for New York, and that I can easily see Daboll falling in love with Sanders.

Film Session: Breaking down what the Commanders new defensive linemen add to the unit - Hogs Haven

The Commanders see a ton of potential in Javon Kinlaw. What is most impressive about Kinlaw, if you watch the tape, is his explosiveness. What can get frustrating is Kinlaw’s inability to finish a play, but throughout a game, you see moments where he is the sole reason an offensive play-call went to hell. The Jets used him all across their line as a 1, 2, 2i, 3, 4, and 6 technique lineman. As a run defender, Kinlaw can wreck linemen in 1-on-1 situations; he plays with good upper body play strength and good overall power in his punches. He can be violent at the point of attack, and with an explosive get-off shows a good ability to disengage/shed blocks in 1-on-1 situations. He struggles against double teams and combination blocks, as he gives up too much ground playing with a high pad level in these instances.

Arizona Cardinals sign veteran Calais Campbell - Revenge Of The Birds

The Arizona Cardinals are bringing back a veteran defensive lineman, one that probably never got away. The team has agreed to a one-year contract with Calais Campbell.

The NFL’s war on Christmas is the programming nobody asked for - SB Nation

Christmas Day is just another chance to watch football. At least that’s what the NFL is hoping. On Tuesday the league announced during owners’ meetings that broadcasts on Christmas Day weren’t just continuing, but expanding. This means we will have a Thanksgiving-like slate of games on Christmas Day, with a back-to-back-to-back triple-header, airing at 1 p.m, 4:30 p.m., and 8:20 p.m. In case that wasn’t annoying enough, two games will air on Netflix, and one on Amazon Prime — with no free, over-the-air way to watch games. Outside of the NFL, Netflix, and Amazon — all of whom only care about the money printer going brrrrrrr is there anyone who actually wants this?
