Enzo Maresca makes stance clear on Jadon Sancho's future, admits struggling Man Utd loanee'could do better'

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has made it clear Jadon Sancho’s situation has not changed despite the emergence of a clause that could see the winger sent back to Manchester United at the end of the season.

Many felt Jadon Sancho’s time at Manchester United was over when the winger joined Chelsea on loan last August. The two clubs reached an agreement that included an obligation to buy Sancho for £25 million.

However, it is understood that Chelsea will consider their options at the end of the season since Sancho has struggled to perform consistently at Stamford Bridge.

Reports emerged recently stating Chelsea can pay £5m to avoid buying Sancho at the end of the season, meaning there is a loophole in the deal, which means the obligation clause is watered down.

Sancho spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund but they passed on the opportunity to sign the 25-year-old on a permanent deal when the temporary spell concluded.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea will make the same decision, albeit at a £5m cost…

Enzo Maresca makes Jadon Sancho admission

It is no secret that Jadon Sancho has continued to struggle at Chelsea.

Sancho’s stock has fallen so much that reports suggest United’s dressing room doesn’t want him back at Old Trafford.

Despite making 29 appearances for the Blues this season, Sancho has managed to score just two goals. His assist tally is more impressive after recording seven since the beginning of the season – but Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is demanding more from his winger.

However, Maresca made his stance clear on Sancho’s future, stating that his situation hasn’t changed since joining the club on loan.

When asked if he had a message for Sancho and if the player needs to do more for Chelsea, Maresca told reporters at his latest press conference: “No but, to be honest, probably you have more news than me, in terms of Jadon.

“For me, Jadon’s situation doesn’t change; it’s exactly the same.

“For sure, in terms of numbers, he could do better, no doubt, but it’s not just about Jadon; I think we have more players in the same situation.

“Now, I don’t need to give Jadon a message because I speak with Jadon every day; I had a conversation yesterday with him.

“He has just to continue to give his best until the end, and this is what we want from Jadon.”

"In terms of numbers, he could do better, no doubt, but it's not just about Jadon."

While Maresca does not make any commitment to signing Sancho in the summer, it sounds like he is at least backing him to rediscover his form towards the end of the season.

Sancho left United under a grey cloud after a public falling out with Erik ten Hag. Ruben Amorim is unlikely to take a risk on the problematic England international.

When is Sancho’s next chance to impress?

Due to poor form, Sancho is not guaranteed a starting place in the Chelsea team. The only way he can change that is by performing when he gets opportunities.

Chelsea are back in action on Thursday night when they host rivals Tottenham in the Premier League. Sancho is in contention to start and he will be looking for his first goal contribution in 13 matches.
