Describing the EU "very, very tough traders" President Donald Trump announced 20pc tariffs on all member states, including Ireland.
In a wide ranging announcement on tariffs in the Rose Garden at the White House, the president said: "Very friendly...they rip us off. So sad to see, so pathetic."
The UK will only have a tariff of around 10pc, he said.
He said the trade deficit between the US and the EU comes in at around 39pc, but said the US has decided to actually charge the EU 20pc in tariffs.
President Trump brandished a graphic of countries and how much they will be charged in tariffs in the announcement.
He said there will be "reciprocal tariffs" on "other nations".
He said there will be a calculation made on the way other countries "cheat" because Americans are a "kind people" and they will be charged "approximately half".
President Trump also announced a 25pc tariff on all "foreign made automobiles".
Mr Trump said today marks the US's "declaration of economic independence".
"Now it's our turn to prosper," he said.
Mr Trump says today will be the day US industry "will be reborn," touting a new "golden age of America".
Announcing that he will impose tariffs of 25% on all foreign-made cars, US President Trump said: “I don’t blame these other countries at all. I blame former presidents and past leaders.
“They let it happen to an extent that nobody can even believe,” he said.
It comes after he said other countries had taken advantage of the US: "In many cases the friend is worse than the foe".
Yesterday, the Institute For Public Policy Research said such a move could “completely destabilise the UK car manufacturing industry”, putting 25,000 jobs at risk. Researchers warned that employees at Jaguar, Land Rover and Mini are some of the most exposed.
