Everton were unable to take anything from their trip across Stanley Park as Liverpool secured the points on Wednesday night.
David Moyes had to watch on as his torrid record at Anfield continued against the Reds in the Merseyside Derby.
As for Everton, they can finally put their run of nine games unbeaten in the Premier League to bed as they need to get back to winning ways.
Premier League safety is all but confirmed now, but the Toffees are in danger of seeing their season peter out with a difficult month ahead of them.
James Tarkowski may feel fortunate not to have been sent off for his challenge on Alexis Mac Allister.
However, he was not the only Everton player on the receiving end of a brutal reception from the Liverpool fans.

Why Everton’s Jordan Pickford laughed at Liverpool fans
Jordan Pickford has always been a divisive figure to opposition fans across the Premier League.
Recently, Pickford said Newcastle United fans give him a lot of grief when he makes the visit to St. James’ Park.

And it seems the Liverpool fans in the Kop end were doing exactly that when he returned to the pitch for the second half.
“A warm welcome from the Kop for Jordan Pickford. They are chanting the name of Divock Origi at him because of a rather famous goal here that he let in against the ex-Liverpool striker,” said Sky Sports’ Adam Bate.
“Get the sense he sees the funny side.”
Pickford has been praised for his displays this season and he was forced into a fairly busy second half at Anfield.
But it was Everton’s attacking struggles which proved to be the downfall as it has so often in recent weeks.
Everton need to find goals quickly
The Toffees really are struggling for goals lately with just three goals scored in their last four Premier League games.
Beto had the ball in the back of the net in the first 45 minutes, but the goal was chalked off for offside.
Pickford will feel he did just about all he could against the Reds, but he simply has not been helped out by the attacking players.
Everton have seen their cushion on the bottom three reduced to 14 points, which will have Moyes keen for his side to find some form quickly with their next game coming up on Saturday.
