'I'm proud': Chelsea star Erin Cuthbert wins Sfwa award for second year running

With 74 international caps and 23 goals to her name, Cuthbert’s consistency and leadership have set her apart, helping her edge out fellow nominees Sophie Howard, Martha Thomas, and Scotland captain Rachel Corsie for the prestigious honour.

Cuthbert, who remains a key figure in Chelsea’s domestic and European campaigns, recently extended her contract until the summer of 2027.

And the former Glasgow City prodigy took time out from international duty to accept the award. She is currently with the Scotland squad as they prepare for their UEFA Women's Nations League clash against Germany at Tannadice on Friday night.

Speaking on receiving the accolade, she said: “I'm honoured to receive the award. Thanks to everyone who voted for me, and my friends, family, staff members and, most importantly, my team-mates who push me on every single day.

"I'm proud, but it comes as a result of being part of a team and being successful as part of a team.

"It's never been anything that I've been aiming for in terms of individual accolades, but it's always nice and it's a reward for the hard work that I've done personally over the year.”

A rib injury forced Cuthbert to sit out of the opening two Nations League defeats to Austria and the Netherlands in February. But she's now fit and ready to make an impact under interim head coach Michael McArdle.

“I just love the refresh here at Scotland and hearing the Scottish accent, just being back with the girls in general,” she said. “It’s nice to break it up because amongst all the pressure at Chelsea, just come here in a bit more of a relaxed environment.

“It’s just nice, the fresh scenery. Being back up in Scotland, the air’s just different. The weather’s looking lovely. I’m happy as Larry being home.

“I love being back in amongst the squad. I was gutted to miss the last camp. I love playing for my country every time I come here.

“I’m excited for the games ahead. It’s a new campaign, feels like a sort of fresh squad, fresh kit as well, fresh everything, so I’m looking forward to see what we can achieve.”
