The Cleveland Browns offseason opened tumultuously after star pass rusher and face of the franchise Myles Garrett requested a trade following a disappointing season that saw the Browns fail to reach four wins.
Garrett rescinded his request after Clevleand rewarded him with what was the largest contract in NFL history at the time for a non-quarterback. Still, it doesn’t seem as if the request is just water under the bridge for all parties.
According to one prominent Browns reporter, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam wants more from Garrett following the pass rusher’s massive payday.
“Owner Jimmy Haslam tells a small group of us at the#NFL Annual Meeting that the#Browns have challenged Myles Garrett to ‘become a real leader of the team’ and ‘we’re hopeful he will be,'” reported Mary Kay Cabot on Twitter on Wednesday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“A ‘real leader’ suggests that Myles hasn’t been all in throughout his illustrious HoF career? How can this possibly be an issue given amount of time, effort, and devotion Myles dedicates to peak preparation every week and definitely brings on Sunday,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“so, they want him to become a corporate line guy. to be the face of their marketing team. that’s all that title ever means,” one fan added.
“Just so we’re on the same page, Myles Garrett isn’t viewed as a real leader, went on a media tour for weeks, still probably wants out and we decided giving him $40mil a year was a good idea? JFC I hate this team,” someone else added.
It’ll be interesting to see how Garrett responds to the callout.
