Mel Kiper compares Shedeur Sanders injury-prone ex-Jets QB

The Giants have been heavily linked to quarterback Shedeur Sanders this offseason, and if the star passer out of Colorado is still available at the No. 3 pick, it’s likely he’ll be headed for New York.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper appeared on UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio this week and gave an interesting comparison for the young quarterback.

“Chad Pennington would probably be my comp for Shedeur,” he said. “I loved Chad coming out (in 2000). I even had him top-five on the big board. He ended up going 18... He went 18 to the Jets. Ended up playing in Miami. Had a really great career. Was he a Hall of Famer? No. But could you get to a Super Bowl with Chad Pennington? Yeah, you could have if you had a supporting cast around him.”

Pennington was the Jets’ first-round pick in 2000. He was the 18th overall pick and the first quarterback selected of the draft.

Pennington spent eight years with the Jets and led them to the playoffs three times. He spent the final three years of his career with the Miami Dolphins and reached the playoffs again in 2008. He was named Comeback Player of the Year with both the Jets (2006) and the Dolphins (2008).

He led the league in completion percentage twice (2002, 2008) and retired as the league’s all-time leader in the category.

Pennington retired in 2011 after suffering an ACL injury. He had played in just four games over three seasons and appeared in 89 games (81) starts over 11 years due to injuries.

The Giants, or whichever team Sanders lands with, will certainly hope the young QB doesn’t have the same injury history as Pennington.

Sanders was 13-11 at Colorado, throwing 7,364 yards for 64 touchdowns and 13 interceptions with a 71.8% completion percentage.
