Newcastle United had Sandro Tonali to thank for their Premier League win over Brentford on Wednesday evening.
Indeed, Newcastle United edged a tight game against the Bees to claim a crucial three points as the Premier League run-in clicked into gear.
While it remains to be seen if fifth place is enough to qualify for the Champions League, Eddie Howe’s side at least kept the momentum up.
Newcastle beat Brentford 2-1 to ensure they were not brought crashing back down to earth just yet, having returned to action for the first time since winning the Carabao Cup.
Alexander Isak scored the opener at St James’ Park before Bryan Mbeumo levelled from the penalty spot.
The Bees then grew into the game, only for Tonali to seal it with an incredible strike from out near the corner flag.
Naturally, the midfielder was asked exactly what was going through his head when he attempted such an audacious effort.

Sandro Tonali issues updated answer on whether or not he meant Newcastle United goal
At first, Tonali claimed his goal was “70% cross and 30% shot”, suggesting there was at least some attempt to actually score from what looked an impossible angle. Such was the difficulty, Brazil legend Roberto Carlos would surely have been proud of that.

However, when speaking to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Tonali actually changed his answer.
Seemingly looking to distant himself somewhat from the acclaim, the Italian admitted he was 100% attempting a cross – only to see it fly in from range.
Sandro Tonali’s stats for Newcastle United vs Brentford
An absolute engine in the middle of the pitch, Tonali’s stunning – albeit clearly fortunate – goal should not take away praise from the rest of his performance.
As is noted below, the midfielder ranked within Newcastle’s top five players for tackles, interceptions, blocks and shots against Brentford.

An all-action display and one that included a memorable strike too, it’s hard to believe there were ever doubts about Tonali’s ability to play alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton in midfield.
