“Exactly What You Want”–Former Ferguson Assistant Claims Man Utd Sold Player For£15M Who Is Better Than Garnacho

Ex-Manchester United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen thinks the Red Devils made a mistake by selling Anthony Elanga.

The Swedish international came back to haunt his former club on Tuesday night when he scored the winner for Nottingham Forest, and speaking to Poker Firma, Meulensteen said that Elanga has more going for him than Alejandro Garnacho:

“I’ve never been sold on Alejandro Garnacho, to be fairly honest. I think there’s a personality and character issue at times. Anthony Elanga on the other hand, his performance last night is exactly what you want to expect from a Manchester United winger – strong, direct, powerful, full of confidence and taking players on.”

“I always thought Elanga showed those glimpses when he was playing for Man United, but the club closed the door on him and his career has restarted at a different club. You really have to question the decision-making process to let players like him go, because there’s been a few who have slipped through the fingers.”

United did not raise a lot of money from Elanga’s sale

Forest paid only £15m to lure the 22-year-old away from Old Trafford at the start of last season. He is probably worth considerably more than that now.

This campaign, Elanga has scored 6 goals and provided 9 assists in 35 appearances, having started 25 of those fixtures.

What does the future hold for Garnacho?

Elanga’s performance at the City Ground was in stark contrast to what we saw from the Argentinian international.

Garnacho struggled to hit his straps with all six of his shots missing the target. It is believed that United would be open to offloading the player at the end of the season, with his price tag having been set at around £60m.

Chelsea considered making an approach for the 20-year-old during the January transfer window, and it remains to be seen whether they will return with a formal offer this summer.
