Everton’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool was not without controversy on Wednesday evening.

David Moyes‘ side finally lost their unbeaten streak as Diogo Jota gave the Reds all three points at Anfield (2 April).

The clash was filled with incidents that are typical of the Merseyside derby as both sides fought for supremacy in a tense encounter.

Richard Keys left shocked after James Tarkowski incident v Liverpool

James Tarkowski somehow avoided a red card in the first half for a late challenge on Alexis Mac Allister where he caught the Reds man with his studs high after winning the ball.

Gary Neville was stunned as the Everton man stayed on the pitch and even Blues legend Andy Gray could not hide his true feelings on this occasion.

Speaking on BeIN SPORTS (2 April, 21:01 pm), he said: “There was a time in our game when you would say to your defender ‘great tackle, take everything’ but you could tell as soon as Tarkowski was going for the ball at normal speed, he was taking not only the ball but Mac Allister as well.”

As Gray was talking, Keys winced as he saw the incident again on the screen.

Everton get away with one despite Liverpool win

The Blues nearly got away with one on their rivals’ patch, they were so close to coming away with a positive result from Anfield but it was not to be.

They should probably count themselves lucky though after Tarkowski stayed on the pitch, even with VAR checking the foul.

Everton created chances against Liverpool.

It was late, it was reckless and seemingly every pundit believes the Blues star should have been dismissed but he remained in place regardless as referee Sam Barratt and the video assistants felt it was a coming together.

Moyes was bullish in the post-match interview that it was not a red card but he was probably just trying to save face and not add on to the media pile-on on his centre-back.

Tarkowski and the Toffees’ focus will now switch to ending the campaign on a high before they move into the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium at the end of the season.

It would have been nice to put another dent in the Reds’ title ambitions as they did at Goodison Park in February but it was not to be on this occasion for Moyes’ side as they suffered a narrow defeat.
