Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has taken to social media with a tongue-in-cheek post after the horror tackle from Everton defender James Tarkowski.

During the first half of the Reds’ 1-0 win over the Blues, the Argentine was the receiving end of a high lunge which resulted in a yellow card.

Tarkowski won the initial challenge for the loose ball but his follow-through caught Mac Allister high, despite the initial decision to caution the former Burnley stopper, Paul Tierney on VAR felt there was no clear and obvious error.

However, the sentiment wasn't shared by Sky Sports with Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, Duncan Ferguson and former Premier League referee Mike Dean disagreeing with the decision.

Posting to Instagram, Mac Allister wrote: "These matches are played with passion and soul. One more, one less."

Accompanying the post was a series of pictures, the first of which showing the contact from Tarkowski on Mac Allister.

The consensus was unanimous that Tarkowski should have been given his marching orders after 11 minutes.

"Most would say he’s got the ball, but he knew exactly what he was doing, Tarkowski," said Neville on Sky Sports. "Mac Allister was there, [Tarkowski was] doing an old-fashioned follow-through - take the lot.

"Yeah, I think he’s [Tarkowski] lucky because he’s gone high. If you’re a defender you can put your foot on the floor if you want to, if you want to leave your studs in the air and catch someone’s knee or shin, I think he’s very lucky.

"I think it’s a bad one, that’s a potential leg breaker."

"I think he’s very lucky there, Tarkowski," Neville added. "There will be some saying it’s a natural follow-through, trust me, you do not need to follow through like that with such force, it’s high, he’s very lucky.

"I wouldn’t have complained at all if that was a red. We all used to do it, classic get away with it, kick the ball away and follow through rather than putting it back on the ground."

The Premier League, in an official statement, described the tackle as reckless.

Writing on social media upon confirmation that Tarkowski would only be receiving a yellow card, they said: "The referee's call of yellow card for a reckless foul by Tarkowski was checked by the VAR, with contact on the follow through after Tarkowski had played the ball deemed to be reckless."
