Stuart Attwell was kept busy as Aston Villa saw off Brighton and Hove Albion 3-0 at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday.

Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Donyell Malen were all on target on the South Coast as Villa kicked off a crucial final period of the campaign in style.

While not every Aston Villa player was at their best against Brighton, there is no denying that the three points were well earned.

However, Villa were made to sweat on multiple contentious issues against Brighton, including Jacob Ramsey avoiding conceding a penalty for a handball offence.

There was also a controversial moment that Jacob Ramsey was caught up in, which saw the Premier League latest release a statement.

Villa goal should have been ruled out v Brighton

In the view of former FIFA official Keith Hackett, Villa’s second goal also should not have stood due to an offence in the build-up.

MORE VILLA STORIES

Ollie Watkins appeared to clip a Brighton defender before Asensio was left with the task of firing home to make it 2-0.

When analysing the footage of the incident in question, Hackett exclusively told Villa News: “That was a foul on the defender and the goal should have been ruled out. Mr Attwell is having a rather poor day at the office.”

Hackett went on to add that he felt VAR Matt Donohue let Attwell down with some indecisive reviews.

Unai Emery’s side flying in Premier League

Had this goal been ruled out, it may well have been an entirely different contest on the South Coast.

However, it was allowed to stand and Malen’s third sealed three valuable points as the Villans continue to fight on multiple fronts.

Aston Villa have a decorated history

Emery‘s side have now won back-to-back Premier League games without conceding to move up to seventh, two points off the top five.

Villa have won six in a row in all competitions, meanwhile, keeping a clean sheet in five of those in what is shaping up to be another memorable campaign.

Some decisions went Villa’s way against Brighton and some in favour of the opposition, but ultimately Emery’s men came out on top.
