US tariffs will bring 'Inflation Day, not Liberation Day': German economy minister

**BERLIN**

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck sharply criticized new US tariffs on Thursday, warning they would harm both European and American economies while fueling inflation.

“For US consumers, this will be Inflation Day rather than Liberation Day,” said Habeck, a Green Party politician. “The US tariff mania could trigger a downward spiral, dragging countries into recession and causing massive damage worldwide—with severe consequences for many people.”

US President Donald Trump announced Wednesday evening sweeping tariffs against dozens of countries and economic regions, including the European Union. Imports from the EU will face a 20% surcharge, while other countries face a minimum rate of 10%.

Habeck emphasized that Germany and the EU have consistently pushed for negotiations rather than confrontation with the US administration. “This remains the right approach,” he said. “It's good that the European Commission continues to aim for a negotiated solution with the US. There's still some time. But if the US doesn't want a negotiated solution, the EU will provide a balanced, clear and determined response.”

The minister stressed the importance of unity among the EU member states in responding to the US tariffs. “We have the largest common internal market in the world. We must use this strength,” Habeck said.
