**Eva Nyström** and **Oona Siren** are two of the 17 West Ham United women’s team players currently on international duty, and the Finland duo want to use this set of fixtures to build confidence ahead of the summer’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.
The pair will be competing in the UEFA Women’s Nations League as their team looks to build on the three points they picked up during the February international break.
That victory came against Hungary, in which Hammers defender Nyström netted the only goal of the game, converting a penalty in the seventh minute of their clash in Budapest, which followed an unfortunate loss to Group B3 leaders Serbia.
Second-placed Finland face Belarus in Novara, Italy, on Friday ahead of their home clash with Hungary on Tuesday 8 April, and Nyström wants to use the games to create momentum for herself and her country in the build-up to their Euros campaign - which commences on Wednesday 2 July against Iceland.
She reiterated: “They’re really important games for us. We’re heading to the Euros in the summer, so we need to perform and take steps in both of these games.”
Reflecting on her goal in the last international break, Nyström said: “It’s always great to score and I haven’t really scored loads for the national team! So it’s always a proud moment.”
The 25-year-old only recently arrived in east London, having joined the Club in the January transfer window after leaving Swedish Damallsvenskan side Hammarby IF, but was able to adjust to new surroundings quickly thanks to her international - and now Hammers - teammate Siren.
Nyström admitted it’s nice to have someone to keep her company on the two-and-a-half hour flight from London to Finland, and that Siren played a big part in helping her settle in at the Club.
“It’s always nice to travel together to the camp. Having another Finnish player here at West Ham is really nice,” she said.
“It’s definitely helped having Oona here. It’s nice to have someone to ask all the silly questions!”
Meanwhile, Siren only joined West Ham in the summer in a move from LSK Kvinner and has been ever present in Rehanne Skinner's side’s midfield since she made her first Barclays Women’s Super League start, at Everton in October.
The midfielder echoed Nyström’s views ahead of her country’s upcoming set of fixtures.
“I enjoyed the last international break,” she said. “Of course, it would've been better if we won both games, but it’s always nice to go back to the national team and see some Finnish people.
“It’s really nice that we’re \[her and Nyström\] at the same Club, so we can travel together. My sister is also in the national team, so it’s also nice to see her. I have a lot of friends in the team.
“I’m really looking forward to it. It’s always a big honour to go away with the national team and hopefully we can get some more wins.”
