Liverpool emerged victorious from a hard-fought Merseyside derby on Wednesday night, grinding out a 1-0 win over a dogged Everton side at Anfield. The result kept Arne Slot’s men 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table with just eight games to go.
It wasn’t a performance built on flair or attacking fireworks, but rather on control, patience, and a moment of inspiration. That moment came in the 57th minute, courtesy of Diogo Jota, who ghosted through Everton’s backline with a slaloming run before slotting calmly in front of the Kop.

For Liverpool, the three points were everything. The title race may look like it’s heading one way, but Jota’s reaction after the match underscored the tension still lurking beneath the surface.
“Massive, of course, not only because it’s a derby but because after this international break we have this run-in of nine games and it was really important to start with three points,” said the Portuguese forward. “Hopefully that gives us momentum for the rest of the season.”
Everton Offer Resistance, But Jota Finds the Key
Merseyside derbies rarely follow the script, and this one was no different. Everton, well aware of their underdog status, were compact and combative from the off. David Moyes’ side weren’t here for an exhibition — they came to frustrate and fight.
Liverpool struggled for rhythm in the first half. There were flickers from Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo, but nothing concrete until Jota took matters into his own hands. After the break, Liverpool began to stretch the pitch and play between the lines. It was Jota who made the difference — again showing that even in a squad loaded with attacking options, he brings a uniquely unpredictable spark.
“I always believe in myself. I always believe that the chances will come and I need to be there to take them,” said Jota. “Hopefully this game starts a good run for me that could be helpful for the team.”

Van Dijk Anchors Defence Amid High Stakes
While Jota provided the breakthrough, Virgil van Dijk once again proved why he remains central to Liverpool’s ambitions. The Dutchman was a commanding presence at the back, nullifying Beto and ensuring Everton rarely tested Caoimhín Kelleher.
Afterwards, the captain spoke with the kind of calm assurance fans have come to expect.

“You play against Everton and they make it very difficult for you… it’s always been tough. They have a certain way of playing that you have to be ready for in all aspects,” Van Dijk explained. “The first half obviously wasn’t our greatest. Jots made a fantastic goal, [we] kept a clean sheet overall and [got] three points, so we move on.”
The message was clear: in title chases, it’s not about dominance — it’s about results. Liverpool had passed yet another test.
Title Race Momentum Builds
Arne Slot’s side now face a testing trip to London this weekend, but the focus remains the same — keep winning and let the rest worry. There’s no illusion within the Liverpool camp about the pressure that comes with leading from the front, but their mindset remains locked in.
“Everyone wants to be in our position and we worked so hard to be in our position. Now we have to keep going,” Van Dijk said. “The season so far has been outstanding and we just have to keep going.”
The blend of resilience, leadership, and timely individual brilliance — from Van Dijk at the back to Jota up top — is what champions are made of. As the season enters its defining stretch, Liverpool look ready to carry the weight of expectation.
