Gary Neville pinpoints exactly what Liverpool players will be thinking after Everton victory

Gary Neville has sent a warning to Liverpool about the Premier League title race following their victory over Everton. The Reds secured a 1-0 win against the Blues in the season's final Merseyside derby at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Diogo Jota broke the deadlock just before the hour mark, after a goalless first half, securing three points for Liverpool. This victory pushed the Reds 12 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, having seen their lead temporarily cut to nine points for 24 hours.

The triumph over Everton means Liverpool now needs a maximum of 13 points from the remaining eight matches to clinch the Premier League title. Liverpool's next match is against Fulham over the weekend, while Arsenal will travel to Everton a day earlier.

Ex-Manchester United defender Neville shared his thoughts on Liverpool's performance against Everton on Sky Sports, and offered insight into what the Reds players might be feeling post-victory in the Merseyside derby, as well as a caution about the title race.

"It wasn't spectacular from Liverpool, but that wasn't the most important thing. Liverpool was really professional, particularly after scoring the goal, I thought was outstanding.

"I think Liverpool has done that quite a few times this season where it has kept the ball really well, managed the game, and Everton couldn't really get any momentum. The most important thing was the three points just after what happened a couple of weeks ago [against Newcastle in Carabao Cup final].

"It would have been a long couple of weeks for the Liverpool players, for Arne Slot, but tonight they'll go into that dressing room and know that they're nearly there and it'll be about making sure they don't make mistakes now."

Neville did question the legitimacy of Diogo Jota's winner though after Luis Diaz appeared in an offside position in the build up. The Colombian was not involved in the play but did seemingly force James Tarkowski to lunge for the ball.

The ex-Manchester United captain added: "It has nothing to do with the referee's decision because it is the rule but Tarkowski has to intercept the ball because Diaz is in an offside position. I don't like that one. I am going to whinge about it.

"As a defender, you have pushed up and played your man offside. Liverpool scores from that and I think it is a definite offside. I know it's not in the rules but to me it is.

"It is like when a goal is scored and there is a player stood in front of the goalkeeper. That is offside because he is interfering with play. I think that Diaz is definitely interfering because Tarkowski has had to stretch. I have got real sympathy with defenders."
