Eddie Howe fear as vital Newcastle United trio could miss key games in Champions League run-in

Referee Stuart Attwell shows Newcastle United's Joelinton a yellow card

Three Newcastle United players remain at risk of a two-match Premier League ban, should they hit the 10 yellow cards limit in the coming three games.

According to FA rules, any player who receives a total of 10 yellow cards in their first 32 Premier League games will receive a two-match suspension. For United, that means negotiating Monday's game at Leicester City and the two home games against Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

The good news is that only three players are in danger of collecting 10 yellow cards before the amnesty. Brazilian midfielder Joelinton is the most at risk, having picked up nine cautions so far. That means one more yellow in the next three games will result in a two-match ban.

Dan Burn currently has eight yellows, while Fabian Schar moved to seven with his booking in the 2-1 win over Brentford on Wednesday night. However, the Swiss defender would have to be cautioned in each of the next three Premier League games to warrant a ban. Newcastle can ill afford to lose either of their central defenders, with Sven Botman recovering from a knee operation and Jamaal Lascelles unlikely to play this season. Red cards still carry a suspension regardless of when they are incurred, of course.

It's not just Newcastle players running the risk, with players from their European rivals also in danger of picking up a ban. While Crystal Palace's Will Hughes and Sasa Lukic of Fulham have already been suspended for 10 yellows, Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo and Ryan Christie are both teetering on nine bookings, while Chelsea's Moises Caicedo is also one caution away from a ban.

Two Nottingham Forest players - Nicolas Dominguez and Ryan Yates - are on eight yellows, along with Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers, however the majority only have two games to negotiate, with Newcastle having a game in hand over their rivals following their Carabao Cup final appearance.

Anthony Gordon will return to the squad for Monday's game at Leicester following his three-match ban for the red card he picked up against Brighton in the FA Cup, provided he shakes off a hip injury picked up on international duty with England.
