Maresca on wingers’ impact and opposition influence

Enzo Maresca has discussed what he expects from Chelsea's wingers heading into tonight's London derby with Spurs.

Maresca has spoken of the need for his wide players to provide an attacking threat as part of his playing style on a few occasions this season.

Pedro Neto has three goals for the campaign, Jadon Sancho two, and Noni Madueke has found the net eight times in all competitions.

‘In terms of our wingers, they arrive there many times, and it’s up to them to decide if they want to cross, if they want to go one v one, or if they want to shoot,’ Maresca explained.

‘For us it's important to arrive there with Jadon, with Noni, with Pedro in a wide space, and then from there create chances.’

The wingers' willingness to run in behind could prove important against a Tottenham side that have a reputation for pressing high up the pitch.

Whatever strategy Ange Postecoglou and his side deploy, Maresca knows his team have to be ready to adapt to the challenge put in front of them on the night.

‘No matter who is playing, we want to be direct and quick when they press higher, but we cannot be direct and quick when they sit back,’ noted Maresca.

‘If you go a little bit back in our season, all the games that had the feeling from outside we were attacking quick, were against teams that were trying to press higher.

‘The last four or five home games - Southampton, Leicester, Wolves, West Ham - were against teams who you could see had 11 players behind the ball almost at the edge of their own box. How can you attack quick? It’s impossible. You need the process.

‘Also, they are teams who live for counter-attacks. If you want to attack quick, they attack quick, but they are more prepared than us to attack quick. So it depends on the other team.’
