Chelsea have been given a much-needed boost as Nicolas Jackson has returned to full training. He missed nine matches for the Blues due to a hamstring issue. The Senegal international has been out since early February, but was seen participating in group sessions at Cobham during training after the international break.
Reports had ruled Jackson out for six to eight weeks, and that was a right estimate: the 22-year-old looks set to return to full fitness in due course. Chelsea have missed his presence at the front, especially with Noni Madueke and Cole Palmer also unavailable.
The Blues have struggled to generate a consistent attacking threat in the absence of a natural forward, and Jackson’s return could offer the team a welcome target. They are gearing themselves up for a pivotal London derby against rivals Tottenham at Stamford Bridge and will be happy to have the hitman back on the grass.
Nicolas Jackson’s fitness for the Blues’ clash against Spurs on April 3 is uncertain. But it’s a boost to have him back in the squad. His pace and movement can add a dynamism to the squad, which they have sorely missed in his time out.
The five league matches, during which he was absent, included three in which points were dropped. The Blues struggled in a humiliating 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Brighton and a narrow 1-0 loss to Arsenal. Those two games laid bare Chelsea’s attacking struggles because they weren’t able to score a goal.
Nicolas Jackson remains valued at Chelsea, despite inconsistencies
Nicolas Jackson’s first campaign at Chelsea was a mixed one. However, his raw numbers showed enough promise for Enzo Maresca to keep him as the main striker. He scored 14 league goals in that first season, but he had an xG of 18.6, which meant he missed quite a few clear chances.
This season, in 23 league appearances, he has nine goals and five assists. His finishing has continued to be inconsistent, as he is underperforming his xG of 11.4. However, he works hard consistently and his general quality has been missed.
Chelsea are pushing hard to end the season in the top four, and they have a number of tough games. In May, they will face Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Nottingham Forest.
